Lake
A lake is an area filled with water, localized in a basin, surrounded by land, and distinct from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean, although, like the much larger oceans, they do form part of the Earth's water cycle. Lakes are distinct from lagoons, which are generally coastal parts of the ocean. Lakes are typically larger and deeper than ponds, which also lie on land, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which usually flow in a channel on land. Most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams. Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Azure Lake
Azure Lake is a fjord-like lake located in east-central British Columbia, Canada. It is an expansion of the Azure River which rises from an unnamed glacier in the Cariboo Mountains. The outflow is also called the Azure River, but it is only long before it flows into the Clearwater River (British Columbia), Clearwater River. Arrow Lakes
The Arrow Lakes in British Columbia, Canada, divided into Upper Arrow Lake and Lower Arrow Lake, are widenings of the Columbia River. The lakes are situated between the Selkirk Mountains to the east and the Monashee Mountains to the west. Beachland is fairly rare, and is interspersed with rocky headlands and steep cliffs. Mountain sides are heavily forested, and rise sharply to elevations around 2,600 metres. Originally two lakes 14 miles apart, the Arrow Lakes became one 230 km long lake due to the reservoir created by the 1960s construction of the Keenleyside Dam; at low water the two lakes remain distinct, connected by a fast-moving section known as the Narrows. Damming the Lower Arrow Lake resulted in water rising 12 metres above natural levels. As a result of higher water, the valley lost 2/3 of its arable land. Angus Horne Lake
Angus Horne Lake is located in Wells Gray Provincial Park in east-central British Columbia, Canada. It is an expansion of Angus Horne Creek which rises from an unnamed glacier in the Cariboo Mountains. The outflow, also called Angus Horne Creek, flows to Azure Lake.Neave, Roland (2023). Naming The lake and creek are named for Angus Horne who was born in Enfield, Nova Scotia, in 1880 and came to the North Thompson Valley in 1912 to work on the Canadian Northern Railway surveys. He was wounded at Vimy Ridge in 1917 and returned to Blue River where he lived for the rest of his life. His log house on the shore of Lake Eleanor, "The Dreamerie", was the showplace of Blue River. Anderson Lake (British Columbia)
Anderson Lake is located about 25 miles North of the town of Pemberton, British Columbia and is about 28.5 km2 (11 sq mi) in area and around 21 km (13 mi) in length. Its maximum depth is 215 meters (705 feet). It is drained by the Seton River, which feeds Seton Lake and so the Fraser River. It is fed by the Gates River, which drains from the Pemberton Pass divide with the Birkenhead River valley towards Pemberton- Mount Currie. It and Seton Lake were originally the same lake, which was cut in half between ten and twenty thousand years ago by a large landslide from the north face of the Cayoosh Range, which fronts Anderson Lake on the east. Ambrose Lake (British Columbia)
Ambrose Lake is a coastal lake on the Sunshine Coast at the north end of the Sechelt Peninsula in Sunshine Coast Regional District, British Columbia, Canada. It is about long and wide, and lies at an elevation of about southwest of the community of Earls Cove and east of the Agamemnon Channel. The primary outflow is an unnamed creek to Ruby Lake. The origin of the name is unknown, but was adopted officially on July 28, 1945. The Ambrose Lake Ecological Reserve encompasses the lake, in part to protect bog landscapes on the northern edge of the lake and along the outlet creek to Ruby Lake, landscapes seldom found elsewhere in southwest British Columbia. Alta Lake (British Columbia)
Alta Lake is a lake in the Resort Municipality of Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. Originally named Summit Lake, Alta Lake was renamed to avoid confusion with the many other Summit Lakes in British Columbia. The name is derived from the Spanish for "high up" or "upper". The lake's southern end is the divide between the basins of the Green and Cheakamus Rivers. Alouette Lake
Alouette Lake, originally Lillooet Lake and not to be confused with the lake of that name farther north, is a lake and reservoir in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada. It is located at the southeast foot of the mountain group known as the Golden Ears and is about 16 km in length on a northeast–southwest axis. It and the Alouette River, formerly the Lillooet River, were renamed in 1914 to avoid confusion with the larger river and lake farther north, with "Alouette", the French word for "lark", being chosen as being melodious and reminiscent of the original name in tone. Most of the basin of Alouette Lake has never been logged and its north flank is protected as part of Golden Ears Provincial Park (formerly part of Garibaldi Provincial Park until that park's division). Adams Lake
Adams Lake is a large, deep, coldwater lake in British Columbia, Canada; its average depth ranks 6th in the world. The southern end of the lake is approximately north of the town of Chase in the Shuswap Country region of British Columbia. The lake's upper reaches lie in the northern Monashee Mountains, while its lower end penetrates the Shuswap Highland. The lake supports Chinook, Sockeye and Coho salmon, Kokanee, mountain whitefish and rainbow trout. Geography The lake is long and between and wide. The surface elevation is above sea level.
