List Of Justices Of The Supreme Court Of Ghana
This is a list of the judges of the Supreme Court of Ghana. The Constitution of Ghana provides for the court to be made up of the Chief Justice of Ghana and not less than nine other Justices of the Supreme Court. It shall be duly constituted by at least five Supreme Court judges. Appointment of judges Article 144 clause 1 of the Constitution of Ghana, 1992 Constitution of Ghana stipulates that the Chief Justice of Ghana is to be appointed by the President of Ghana acting in consultation with the Council of State (Ghana), Council of State and with the approval of the Parliament of Ghana. Article 144 clause 2 states that Justices of the Supreme court are appointed on the advice of the Judicial Council in consultation with the Council of State and with the approval of Parliament. The Supreme Court of Ghana is the highest judicial body in Ghana. Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe
Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe is a Ghanaian lawyer and judge. He was a justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana between 2009 and 2020. Early life and education Gbadegbe hails from the Volta Region of Ghana. He was born on 8 December 1950. He obtained his bachelor of laws (LLB) degree in 1973 from the University of Ghana and subsequently received his qualifying Certificate in Law from the Ghana School of Law in 1975. Career Prior to Gbadegbe's appointment to the Supreme Court of Ghana in 2009, he had served on the Ghaanaian bench for twenty (20) years. He was appointed Justice of the High Court in 1989 and served in that capacity for a decade. Anthony Benin
Anthony Benin is a Ghanaian judge and is a former justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana. He was one of two judges sworn into office by the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama in the presence of the Chief Justice of Ghana, Georgina Theodora Wood in November 2012. He has presided in cases of the ECOWAS court. Early life and education Benin was born on 4 January 1950 at Kumasi. He had his secondary education at Sekondi College, completing his studies in 1970. He continued at the University of Ghana, graduating with his bachelor's degree in 1973. He proceeded to the Ghana School of Law where he completed his studies in 1975. Julius Ansah
Julius Ansah (born 1950) is a Ghanaian judge who served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana from 2004 to 2020. Ansah was nominated to the Supreme Court of Ghana by John Kufuor, who was then the President of Ghana. He was sworn in by John Kufuor in October 2004 along with two other new Supreme Court judges, Felix Michael Lartey and Richard Twum Aninakwah. As the most senior judge at the time, he acted as the Chief Justice of Ghana between 20 December 2019 and 7 January 2020 following the retirement of Sophia Akuffo as the Chief Justice. Kwasi Anin-Yeboah succeeded Sophia Akuffo as the next Chief Justice. Vida Akoto-Bamfo
Vida Akoto-Bamfo is a retired Ghanaian Supreme Court Judge. She served on the Supreme Court bench from 2009 to 2019. Early life and education Akoto-Bamfo was born on 7 February 1949 to Mr. Alfred Kingsley Bannerman-Williams and Madam Grace Darkua Dodoo at Pokuase, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. She had her early education at Accra Royal School in James Town (British Accra). In 1963, she gained admission to Mfantsiman Girls' Secondary School where she obtained her 'O' Level certificate. She later continued at Aburi Girls' Senior High School from 1967 to 1969. She studied law at the University of Ghana Law School between 1972 and 1975. Sophia Adinyira
Sophia Ophelia Adjeibea Adinyira is a Ghanaian retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana and a member of the United Nations Appeal Tribunal. Early life and education Adinyira was born on 1 September 1949 at Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana. She attended Fijai Senior High School from 1961 to 1966 for her 'O' Level certificate and Wesley Girls' High School from 1966 to 1968 for her 'A' Level certificate. She had her legal training at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, and was called to the Ghana Bar in 1973. Career Adinyira worked at the Attorney General's Department in 1974 as an Assistant State Attorney. Sophia Akuffo
Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo (born 20 December 1949) was the Chief Justice of Ghana from 2017 until 20 December 2019. Prior to that, she had already been a Judge in the Supreme Court of Ghana since 1995. Education The daughter of a Presbyterian minister, she had her secondary education at Wesley Girls' High School, Cape Coast and obtained her Bachelor of law degree from the University of Ghana. She furthered her education at the Ghana School of Law where she qualified as a barrister. Akuffo trained as a lawyer under Nana Akuffo-Addo. She has a Master's degree in Law from Harvard University in USA. Supreme Court Of Seychelles
The Supreme Court of Seychelles is the highest trial court in Seychelles. It was created in 1903 by Order in Council, when it consisted of one judge who was the Chief Justice of the Court. Appeal cases with final judgments of the court in civil matters were transferred to the Supreme Court of Mauritius. When Seychelles became a Republic in 1976, a new Seychelles Court of Appeal was constituted which consisted of a President, two Justices of Appeal and the Judges of the Supreme Court as ex-officio members.
