Independent Station (North America)
An independent station is a type of television station broadcasting in the United States or Canada that is not affiliated with any broadcast television network; most commonly, these stations carry a mix of syndicated, brokered and in some cases, local programming to fill time periods when network programs typically would air. Stations that are affiliated with networks such as The CW, MyNetworkTV or to a lesser degree, even Fox, may be considered to be quasi-independent stations as these networks mainly provide programming during primetime, with limited to no network-supplied content in other time periods. Independent radio is a similar concept with regards to community radio stations, although with a slightly different meaning (as many non-"indie" commercial broadcasting radio stations produce the vast majority of their own programming, perhaps retaining only a nominal affiliation with a radio network for news updates or syndicated radio programming). KUSI-TV
KUSI-TV (channel 51) is an independent television station in San Diego, California, United States. It is the sole property of locally based McKinnon Broadcasting Company. KUSI-TV's studios are located on Viewridge Avenue (near I-15) in the Kearny Mesa section of San Diego, and its transmitter is located southeast of Spring Valley. The station operates low-power translator K12PO in Temecula (part of the Los Angeles market). After a 15-year dispute over permit ownership that almost derailed the launch of the station on multiple occasions, KUSI began broadcasting in 1982 as a partnership between United States International University and McKinnon. It was the first independent station built in San Diego proper. Financial and accreditation problems at USIU led to the sale of its stake to McKinnon in 1990, with McKinnon exercising veto power to block any sale to another entity. KXLA (channel 44) is an ethnic independent television station licensed to Rancho Palos Verdes, California, United States, serving the Los Angeles area. The station is owned by Rancho Palos Verdes Broadcasters, Inc., whose president and majority owner, Ronald Ulloa, also owns Twentynine Palms–licensed KVMD (channel 31). KNLA-CD, virtual channel 20 (UHF digital channel 32), is a low-powered, Class A Multicultural Independent television station licensed to Los Angeles, California United States. The station is owned by Sovryn Holdings Inc, their Transmitter is located atop Mount Wilson. History The low power station started its life as KNLA-LP on channel 27, then eventually moved to physical channel 50, mapping to virtual channel 20, to make room for KHTV-CD in Los Angeles, California, until 2012. The station started out broadcasting in Asian languages, similar to what KSCI and KXLA currently offer. Then KNLA changed its focus to target Los Angeles area residents of Central American heritage. It is owned by the CBS News and Stations group alongside CBS West Coast flagship KCBS-TV (channel 2). Both stations share studios at the CBS Studio Center on Radford Avenue in the Studio City section of Los Angeles, while KCAL-TV's transmitter is located atop Mount Wilson.
