List Of Horse Breeds In DAD-IS
This is a list of all the horse breeds in the DAD-IS, the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System, a database of the FAO. There are about 4150 horse breed entries, reported by almost 200 countries, not all of which have horses. The breed names are those held in the database, and thus reflect the diversity between the various reporting countries; intentionally, no attempt has been made to link, unify, rationalise or translate them. One spelling error has been corrected. The list can be sorted by country, which offers no advantage over the database itself. The default sort order is alphabetical by breed, which allows the geographical range of a breed such as the Morgan to be seen. It is also text-searchable, which may help find all entries for, say, the Mérens. DAD-IS is the acronym of the worldwide Domestic Animal Diversity Information System of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, within the FAO's management of animal genetic resources programme.Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DADIS)- About. Morgan Horse
The Morgan horse is one of the earliest horse breeds developed in the United States. Tracing back to the foundation sire Figure, later named Justin Morgan after his best-known owner, Morgans served many roles in 19th-century American history, being used as coach horses and for harness racing, as general riding animals, and as cavalry horses during the American Civil War on both sides of the conflict. Morgans have influenced other major American breeds, including the American Quarter Horse, Tennessee Walking Horse and the Standardbred. During the 19th and 20th centuries, they were exported to other countries, including England, where a Morgan stallion influenced the breeding of the Hackney horse. In 1907, the US Department of Agriculture established the US Morgan Horse Farm near Middlebury, Vermont for the purpose of perpetuating and improving the Morgan breed; the farm was later transferred to the University of Vermont. Mérens Horse
The Mérens, Cheval de Mérens or Caballo de Merens, still occasionally referred to by the older name of Ariégeois pony, is a small, rustic horse breed, horse native to the Pyrenees and Ariégeois mountains of southern France, where the river Ariège (river), Ariège flows, and northern Spain, near Andorra. Two general types, a small, light traditional mountain horse and a taller, sportier modern type, are found. Always black (horse), black in color, Mérens must meet strict physical standards in order to be registered in the stud book. The breed is known for its sure-footedness on mountain terrain, as well as for its endurance, hardiness and docility. The French breed registry organizes regional offices, and partners with other national organizations in Europe to preserve and promote the breed.
