Collingwood Manor Massacre
The Collingwood Manor Massacre is the name of an infamous hit on three Chicago gunmen by the notorious Purple Gang on September 16, 1931, after the men had betrayed the trust of the others in the gang. Background Gambling, local wire service, drug distribution, bootlegging, certain trade unions, as well as extortion rackets, were all operated by the Purple Gang. In 1927, the Purple Gang was on top of their game running Detroit's underworld. When three Chicago gunmen, Joseph "Nigger Joe" Lebowitz, Herman "Hymie" Paul, and Isadore "Izzy the Rat" Sutker, fled to Detroit, the Purple Gang's status was put to the test. The men had shaken down Chicago speakeasy operators for protection money. Unknown to them, the victims were under Al Capone's syndicate for purchasing liquor from his suppliers. Donald Goines
Donald Goines (pseudonym: Al C. Clark; December 15, 1936 – October 21, 1974) was an African-American writer of urban fiction. His novels were deeply influenced by the work of Iceberg Slim. Early life and family Goines was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 15, 1936. His parents were a middle-class black couple that ran a laundry business, with his mother Myrtle Goines telling Goines that her family was descended from Jefferson Davis and a woman who was enslaved. Donald was the middle child of three, and the only son. At age 15, Goines lied about his age to join the Air Force and fought in the Korean War. Adult life During his stint in the Armed Forces, Goines developed an addiction to heroin that continued after his honorable discharge in the mid-1950s. In order to support his addiction, Goines committed crimes including pimping, larceny, robbery, illegal liquor manufacturing and theft. Hazelwood Massacre
The Hazelwood massacre was a June 1971 mass murder in which eight people were shot and killed in a house on Hazelwood Street in Detroit, Michigan. All eight victims were African-American. It is the largest mass murder in Detroit's history. Police believed that one of the victims, heroin dealer and pimp Robert Gardner, was the target and that the others were killed to avoid leaving witnesses. Police further believed that Gardner had robbed two Toronto drug dealers while they were visiting Detroit in March 1971 and that the Toronto dealers took out a hit on Gardner in revenge. It remains officially unsolved. Good Hart, Michigan
Readmond Township is a civil township of Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. Communities Good Hart is an unincorporated community in the township on the shore of Lake Michigan at . It is on M-119 about 13 miles north of Harbor Springs and eight miles south of Cross Village. This was a center of Ojibwe settlement under the leadership of Joseph Black Hawk and his brother Good Heart in the early 19th-century. The Robison family murders, also referred to as the Good Hart murders, were the mass murders of Richard Robison, his wife Shirley Robison (née Fulton), and their four children; Ritchie, Gary, Randy, and Susan on June 25, 1968. Algiers Motel Incident
The Algiers Motel incident (also called the Algiers Motel Murders) occurred in Detroit, Michigan, United States, throughout the night of July 25–26, 1967, during the racially charged 12th Street Riot. At the Algiers Motel, approximately one mile east of where the riot began, three civilians were killed and nine others abused by a riot task force composed of the Detroit Police Department, the Michigan State Police, and the Michigan Army National Guard. Among the casualties were three black teenage boys killed, and two white women and seven black men wounded as a result. The task force was searching the area after reports were received that a gunman or group of gunmen, possibly snipers, had been seen at or near the motel. 1967 Detroit Riot
The 1967 Detroit Riot, also known as the 12th Street Riot or Detroit Rebellion, was the bloodiest of the urban riots in the United States during the "Long, hot summer of 1967". Composed mainly of confrontations between Black residents and the Detroit Police Department, it began in the early morning hours of Sunday July 23, 1967, in Detroit, Michigan. The precipitating event was a police raid of an unlicensed, after-hours bar, known as a '' blind pig'', on the city's Near West Side. Troy is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. Its population was 87,294 at the 2020 U.S. census, making Troy the most populous city in the county and the 13th most-populous municipality in the state. Troy Axe Murders
The Troy axe murders were a familicide of seven individuals in Troy, Michigan, United States, in September 1964. William G. Gravlin (June 4, 1934–March 1, 1994), a Royal Oak fireman, was convicted of slashing his cousin's wife in 1961 and was committed to the Pontiac State Hospital. After his release, Gravlin's wife asked for a divorce. Several days later, Gravlin killed his wife, their five-year-old daughter, and his five stepchildren. Gravlin killed six of the victims using a double-edged axe; he killed his daughter with a shotgun. He left handwritten apology notes on each of the bodies. Gravlin confessed to the killings but was initially found incompetent to stand trial and spent three years at the Ionia State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.
