This is a list of historic properties in Tucson, Arizona, which includes a photographic gallery of some of the remaining historic structures. Tucson is a city and the county seat of Pima County. It is the second-largest populated city in Arizona behind Phoenix. Included in this list are the photographs of some of the districts. buildings and individual properties identified as historic by the National Register of Historic Places. Also included are images related to the historic Fort Lowell which was an active United States Army post from 1873 to 1891 on the outskirts of Tucson. Brief history It is unknown exactly when and who were the first Native-American tribes to settle in the Tucson Valley. Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase ( es, region=MX, la Venta de La Mesilla "The Sale of La Mesilla") is a region of present-day southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico that the United States acquired from Mexico by the Treaty of Mesilla, which took effect on June 8, 1854. The purchase included lands south of the Gila River and west of the Rio Grande where the U.S. wanted to build a transcontinental railroad along a deep southern route, which the Southern Pacific Railroad later completed in 1881–1883. The purchase also aimed to resolve other border issues. The first draft was signed on December 30, 1853, by James Gadsden, U.S. ambassador to Mexico, and by Antonio López de Santa Anna, president of Mexico. The U.S. Senate voted in favor of ratifying it with amendments on April 25, 1854, and then sent it to President Franklin Pierce. The Barrio Santa Rosa is a neighborhood in Tucson, Arizona that is also a historic district listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on September 23, 2011 . Barrio Libre
Barrio Libre is a neighborhood in Tucson, Arizona notable for its existence as a relatively unchanged 19th-century Hispanic neighborhood of close-packed row houses. Houses in the barrio are typically adobe with very plain detailing, reflecting the area's history as a district of townhouses for Mexican ranching families. The district includes more than 200 contributing structures, with relatively few non-conforming buildings. The district is bounded by 14th and 18th streets to the north and south, and by Stone and Osborne to the east and west. Meyer Avenue runs through the center of the barrio. El Paso And Southwestern Railroad
The El Paso and Southwestern Railroad began in 1888 as the Arizona and South Eastern Railroad, a short line serving copper mines in southern Arizona. Over the next few decades, it grew into a 1200-mile system that stretched from Tucumcari, New Mexico, southward to El Paso, Texas, and westward to Tucson, Arizona, with several branch lines, including one to Nacozari, Mexico. The railroad was bought by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1924 and fully merged into its parent company in 1955. Interstate 10 (I-10) is the southernmost cross-country highway in the American Interstate Highway System. I-10 is the fourth-longest Interstate in the United States at , following I-90, I-80, and I-40. Rincon Heights Historic District
Rincon Heights Historic District is a historic place in Tucson, Arizona. It is roughly bounded by 6th Street, Broadway Boulevard, Campbell Avenue, and Fremont Avenue. Rincon Heights was officially listed as a National Historic District in February 2013. The City funded the preparation of the nomination with a grant it obtained from the State Historic Preservation Office, and the nomination was prepared by Dr. Brooks Jeffery from The University of Arizona and his students, who submitted an application for its official designation as a historic district. Ettore DeGrazia
Ettore "Ted" DeGrazia (June 14, 1909 – September 17, 1982) was an American impressionist, painter, sculptor, composer, actor, director, designer, architect, jeweler, and lithographer. Described as "the world's most reproduced artist", DeGrazia is known for his colorful images of Native American children of the American Southwest and other Western scenes. DeGrazia also painted several series of exhibitions like the Papago Legends, Padre Kino, Cabeza de Vaca. Childhood Ettore DeGrazia was born to Italian immigrants, on June 14, 1909 in Morenci, Arizona Territory (later the state of Arizona in 1912). The DeGrazia's family immigrated in 1898 from the Italian regions of Calabria and Campania. His parents, Salvador Domenico De Grazia and Lucia Gagliardi, were strong people who worked very hard for their family of seven children. His father and uncles were copper miners in Morenci. DeGrazia Gallery In The Sun Historic District
DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun Historic District is the artistic manifestation and architecture constructed by Ettore DeGrazia. The property is a series of buildings scattered throughout a natural desert setting. Built in Tucson near the intersection of Swan Road and Skyline the property is now a museum open to the public. Construction began in 1951 with the open air Mission in the Sun followed by a series of other expressionistic adobe buildings. The gallery/museum was constructed in 1965 with details including cactus flooring, exposed wood beams, rafters and unique artistic finishes. The gallery replaced the first DeGrazia Building constructed in 1944 on the corner of Prince and Campbell Road. Artists and friends who spent time at the new gallery included Thomas Hart Benton, Olaf Wieghorst, Jack Van Ryder, Pete Martinez and Ross Santee. Armory Park Historic Residential District
Armory Park Historic Residential District is a Historic districts in the United States, historic district in Tucson, Arizona. It was listed on the NRHP in 1976 and the district boundaries were increased in 1996. Part of the eastern section of the Armory Park Historic Residential District was first developed as company housing for employees of the Southern Pacific Railroad. When the railroad moved out of this area and combined with Union Pacific Railroad, the houses were auctioned off and moved to other areas. In 2000, a solar-powered housing development, known as Armory Park del Sol, was built here. Developer John Wesley Miller named the streets in the subdivision after historic people and events of the area, referring to both railroads that were important to its history. This subdivision and its locally themed street names were featured in a December 2013 "Street Smarts" column, published in the ''Arizona Daily Star'' newspaper.
