Westman Region
The Westman Region (also known as Western Manitoba or simply Westman) is an informal geographic region of the Canadian province of Manitoba located in the southwestern corner of the province. Brandon is the largest urban centre in the Westman Region. Primary economic industries in the region include agriculture, food processing, manufacturing, education, petroleum, transportation, and tourism. Riding Mountain National Park and eight provincial parks are located within the Westman Region. Together with the Parkland Region to the north, Westman composes the broader Prairie Mountain health region, and is provided healthcare services by Prairie Mountain Health. As of 2016, the Westman Region had a population of 113,618 people, making it the most populous area of Manitoba outside of the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region. Glenboro is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Glenboro – South Cypress within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held village status prior to January 1, 2015. it is located about 80 km southeast of the City of Brandon. In the 2016 census it had a population of 624. The community is a service centre for the surrounding farming community. Glenboro is the home of "Sara the camel", a 17′ statue created in October 1978, by Mr. George Barone of Barone Sculptures in Winnipeg. "Sara" is emblematic of the nearby Spirit Sands, and has been used to promote the Glenboro area and nearby Spruce Woods Provincial Park. Brandon () is the second-largest city in the province of Manitoba, Canada. It is located in the southwestern corner of the province on the banks of the Assiniboine River, approximately west of the provincial capital, Winnipeg, and east of the Saskatchewan border. Brandon covers an area of with a population of 51,313, and a census metropolitan area population of 54,268. It is the primary hub of trade and commerce for the Westman Region as well as parts of southeastern Saskatchewan and northern North Dakota, an area with a combined population of over 180,000 people. Pipestone, Manitoba
Pipestone, Manitoba is a community in southwestern Manitoba, Canada. Located at the corner of highways 2 and 83, Pipestone is approximately 35 km from either Virden or Melita, approximately to the United States border and approximately to the Saskatchewan border. It is mainly an agricultural area with some oil drilling nearby. Pipestone is part of the Rural Municipality of Pipestone. The office for the municipality is located in Reston, approximately 10 kilometers west on Highway 2. It was the birthplace of John Hamilton Roberts, who commanded the landing forces in the Dieppe Raid in 1942. There is an amateur video of a large destructive tornado that passed through farm fields near Pipestone on June 23, 2007, and another on July 23, 2008. An oil spill the size of two football fields was discovered near Pipestone in January 2012. More than 100,000 litres of oil seeped into surrounding farmland as a result of a broken pipe. Elkhorn, Manitoba
Elkhorn is an unincorporated community recognized as a local urban district in the Rural Municipality of Wallace – Woodworth within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held village status prior to January 1, 2015. It was originally incorporated as a village on January 2, 1906. Elkhorn is located approximately west of Brandon. History The community was first settled when the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived in 1882. In the CPR survey Elkhorn is located at mile sixty-four west of Brandon, in what was known as the Broadview subdivision. The Post Office Department appointed John McLeod, one of the district's first settlers, to be the community's first post master and the post office opened December 1, 1883. A board of trade was organized in April 1899 and lobbied for further settlement in the community and surrounding municipality, better infrastructure, and improvement of commerce. Virden, Manitoba
Virden is a town in southwestern Manitoba, Canada. Oil was first discovered in 1951, and Virden has since come to be known as the "Oil Capital of Manitoba". History Virden has its roots as a farming community known as Gopher Creek. However, it became a railway tent town in 1882, and grew in population due to the brick and flour industry, as well as with the discovery of oil in the 1950s. The origin of the name, Virden, allegedly arose as a misspelling of the German town Verden in the homeland of the 7th Duke of Manchester's wife, Louisa Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. Oak Lake, Manitoba
Oak Lake is an unincorporated urban community in the Rural Municipality of Sifton within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to January 1, 2015. It is located west of Brandon along the Trans-Canada Highway. The lake after which it was named is in the rural municipality's western area. During the late 19th century, the area around Oak Lake was a popular stopping point for fur traders and settlers due to the large number of big oak trees (revered for their strength) located around the lake that could be used to repair their wagons. In the fall of 1881, work crews on the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway had reached Flat Creek to the east of the current townsite. The Rural Municipality of Arthur is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on December 22, 1883. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the RM of Albert and the RM of Edward to form the Municipality of Two Borders. The RM was located in the southwestern part of the province, along its border with the state of North Dakota in the United States.
