This is a list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle that are listed on the State Register of Heritage Places. In 2017, there are 252 such places, including buildings and monuments. This list includes many places which are included within the Fremantle West End Heritage area, a historic district which includes about 250 buildings, which was itself listed on the State Register in 2016. This list is based on information from the State Heritage Office's inHerit database. City Of Fremantle
The City of Fremantle is a local government area in the south of Perth, Western Australia. The City covers an area of , and lies about southwest of the Perth central business district. History The City of Fremantle is named after Charles Fremantle, who in 1829 claimed for George IV "all that part of New Holland (Australia) which is not included within the territory of New South Wales", but who was also charged just three years earlier in April 1826 with raping a 15-year-old girl. In 1848 a town trust was formed comprising a chairman and a committee of five. For the next twenty-three years they set about constructing roads and many public buildings with the use of convict labour. By 1870 the population of Fremantle had reached 3,796 and it was a moderately flourishing town, resulting in a move among the colonists to secure greater control of the management of their affairs. Talbot Hobbs
Lieutenant General Sir Joseph John Talbot Hobbs, (24 August 1864 – 21 April 1938) was an Australian architect and First World War general. Early life Hobbs was born in London, the son of Joseph and his wife Frances Ann Hobbs (née Wilson). Educated at St Mary's church school, Merton, Surrey, Hobbs joined the volunteer artillery in 1883. He also worked as draughtsman for a builder, John Hurst. In 1886, he emigrated with Hurst to Western Australia and established an architectural practice in Perth in 1887. Hobbs designed many of the well known public buildings in Perth and Fremantle, including the Weld Club, the Savoy Hotel and the Perth Masonic Lodge. Hobbs was treasurer of the Western Australian Institute of Architects in 1896, and later became the institute's president from 1909 to 1911. Tarantella Night Club
The former Tarantella Night Club building, also known as the German Consulate and Norddeutscher-Lloyd Building is a heritage building located at Mouat Street in the Fremantle West End Heritage area. The building dates from the gold rush boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and is of historic significance. Description The building is an unusual use of stone and Federation Romanesque architecture, especially in Fremantle where the stucco ornamentation of the Free Classical style dominates. The building occupies all of the lot area and stands alone, separated from adjacent buildings by laneways. It has a narrow frontage and steep pitched gable, the height of which is further accentuated by a castellated tower crowned with a tiled, pyramidal roof and spire. Schweppes Australia is the non-alcohol business of Asahi Breweries operating in Australia, having arrived in the country in 1850. In 1877, the first factory was built in Sydney. Tolley & Company Warehouse
The Tolley & Company Warehouse, also known as the Tolley Bond Store and the Tolley & Company Building, is a heritage building located at 1 Pakenham Street in the Fremantle West End Heritage area. It dates from the gold rush boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and is of historic significance. The building was constructed in 1897 for Tolley & Co., wine and spirit merchants, who remained in the same building until 1911. The Federation free classical style three storey rendered building includes a half basement below street level. The building façade has a parapet with spherical decorative elements above the engaged pilasters. It features a decorative pediment with pilasters rusticated to the first floor. The name "Tolley & Compy. Limited Merchants" appears in stucco across the alley way entrance to the courtyard at the rear of the building on the right side of the building. National Hotel (Fremantle)
The National Hotel is on the corner of High and Market Streets Fremantle. Originally built as a shop in 1868, it was occupied by the National Bank in the early 1880s. When the bank relocated in 1886, the building became the National Hotel. Original building The site was originally occupied by a single storey shop in 1868 which was run in 1869 by Abraham Moise Josephson (who was later a successful pearl merchant). During the early 1880s the building was occupied by a branch of the National Bank of Australasia. In 1886 the branch relocated to a premises in High Street opposite Sandover's store. Later that year the building was converted into a hotel retaining the name as the National Hotel. The site and building was then owned by John J. Higham, a local merchant and businessman. Joseph Francis Allen
Joseph Francis Allen (6 August 1869 – 23 May 1933) was an Australian politician. Life Born at Perranzabuloe in Cornwall to carpenter William Allen and Salome Williams, he came to Parramatta in 1879 and from 1884 worked as an articled clerk to a Sydney architect, subsequently becoming a civil engineer. After moving to Western Australia in 1894, he married Jean Symington Buntine on 25 September 1900. In 1903 Allen was elected to East Fremantle Municipality, on which he would continue to serve (with a one-year break) until his death. He was mayor from 1909 to 1914. In 1914 he was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council as a Liberal member. He was Chairman of Committees from 1919 until his defeat in the 1920 election.
