Jules Carde
Jules Gaston Henri Carde (3 June 1874 – 10 July 1949) was a French colonial administrator who served as Governor General of French West Africa and then Governor General of Algeria. Life Jules Gaston Henri Carde was born in Batna, Algeria on 3 June 1874. He joined the colonial administration under Joseph Gallieni in Madagascar, where he remained for seven years until 1907. He was then Chief of Staff to the Governor of Martinique, secretary general of the Ivory Coast, Chief of Staff of the Governor General of French Equatorial Africa (AEF), lieutenant governor of French Congo and General Secretary of the Governor of French West Africa (AOF). From 1919 to 1923 he was the first Commissioner of the French Republic in Cameroon, whose status changed during this period. Gabriel Louis Angoulvant (born 1872 in Longjumeau, France – died 1932 in Paris) was a colonial administrator in the second French colonial empire. He was appointed governor of French Ivory Coast in 1908. He had little prior experience in Africa and believed that the development of Ivory Coast could proceed only after the forceful conquest, or so-called pacification, of the colony. He thus embarked on a vigorous campaign, sending military expeditions into the hinterland to quell resistance. As a result of these expeditions, local rulers were compelled to obey existing antislavery laws, supply porters and food to the French forces, and ensure the protection of French trade and personnel. In return, the French agreed to leave local customs intact and specifically promised not to intervene in the selection of rulers. Joost Van Vollenhoven
Joost van Vollenhoven (21 July 1877, Rotterdam – 20 July 1918, Parcy-et-Tigny, Aisne) was a Dutch-born French soldier and colonial administrator. Van Vollenhoven died in the Second Battle of the Marne. Early life Joost van Vollenhoven was Dutch by birth. His parents had commercial interests in Algeria, then a French colony, and this is where he grew up, eventually studying law. He took French citizenship in 1899 at the age of 22, and entered the École coloniale to train as a colonial administrator, where he later taught. After his military service in the 1st regiment of Zouaves, he left the army as a reserve sergeant in 1902. By 1903 he was appointed Secretary General of the Ministry of Colonies, and director of finance in 1905. From there he was made Secretary General to the Governor of French Equatorial Africa. François Joseph Clozel
Marie François Joseph Clozel (29 March 1860 – 10 May 1918) was a French colonial administrator who became Governor General of French West Africa. Interested in understanding the region, he took an active part in developing French scientific research in West Africa in collaboration with the anthropologist Maurice Delafosse. Biography François Clozel was born on 29 March 1860 in Annonay, in the Ardèche department. He graduated with a diploma in Arabic from the School of Oriental Languages. He completed his military service in a regiment of Zouaves in Algeria. He participated in the mission of Casimir Maistre to the French Congo in 1892. He led an expedition in 1894-95 in the north of this country. In 1896 he was sent to the Ivory Coast. William Merlaud-Ponty
Amédée William Merlaud-Ponty (4 February 1866 – 13 June 1915) was a French colonial administrator. He was a Governor General of French West Africa (1908–1915) who particularly interested himself in the economic development and education of Africa. During World War I, Merlaud-Ponty was responsible for recruiting volunteers for African battlefields. At Dakar's railway station a 1923 monument dedicated "to the creators of French West Africa and the glory of the Black army" features Paul Ducuing's statues of the ''tirailleur'' Demba and the ''zouave'' Dupont.
