Stratigraphic Units
A stratigraphic unit is a volume of Rock (geology), rock of identifiable origin and relative age range that is defined by the distinctive and dominant, easily mapped and recognizable petrology, petrographic, lithology, lithologic or paleontology, paleontologic features (facies) that characterize it. Units must be ''mappable'' and ''distinct'' from one another, but the contact need not be particularly distinct. For instance, a unit may be defined by terms such as "when the sandstone component exceeds 75%". Lithostratigraphic units Sequences of sedimentary rock, sedimentary and volcanic rocks are subdivided the basis of their shared or associated lithology. Formally identified lithostratigraphic units are structured in a hierarchy of lithostratigraphic rank, higher rank units generally comprising two or more units of lower rank. Going from smaller to larger in rank, the main lithostratigraphic ranks are Bed, Member, Formation, Group and Supergroup. Formal names of lithostratigraph ...

Jeffersonville Limestone
The Devonian Jeffersonville Limestone is a mapped bedrock unit in Indiana and Kentucky. It is highly fossiliferous. Description The Jeffersonville is a coarse grained, dark gray, thick bedded, fossiliferous limestone.Butts, Charles, 1915, Geology and mineral resources of Jefferson County, Kentucky: Kentucky Geological Survey eport 4th series, v. 3, pt. 2, 270 p. R. D. Perkins (1963) divided the Jeffersonville into five zones based on petrology and fossil content,Ronald D. Perkins, 1963, Petrology of the Jeffersonville Limestone (Middle Devonian) of Southeastern Indiana: Geological Society of America Bulletin (1963), 74(11):1335-135abstract/ref> and these are summarized below (in stratigraphic order): * ''Paraspirifer acuminatus'' zone (top) * fenestrate bryozoan-brachiopod zone * ''Brevispirifer gregarius'' zone * ''Amphipora''-zone * Coral zone (base, overlies Geneva Dolomite or Louisville Limestone) Fossils The Jeffersonville Limestone is well known for its fossils, including ...

Harrodsburg Limestone
The Harrodsburg Limestone is a geologic formation, a member of the Sanders Group of Indiana Limestone, of Mississippian age. It was named for Harrodsburg in southern Monroe County, Indiana by T. C. Hopkins and C. E. Siebenthal ("''The Bedford Oolitic Limestone of Indiana''" - 1897). It is made up primarily of calcarenite and calcirudite. It also may include some beds of dolomite and shale. Harrodsburg Limestone is found throughout the part of the Illinois Basin running through southern Indiana. Hamilton Formation
The Hamilton Group is a Devonian-age geological group in the Appalachian region of the United States. It is present in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, northwestern Virginia and Ontario, Canada. It is mainly composed of marine shale with some sandstone. There are two main formations encompassed by the group: the Mahantango Formation and the Marcellus Shale. In southwestern Virginia, where the two sub-units are not easily distinguishable, the Hamilton Group is broadly equivalent to the Millboro Shale or Millboro Formation. The group is named for the village of Hamilton, New York. These rocks are the oldest strata of the Devonian gas shale sequence. Stratigraphic Setting The Hamilton Group consists of the Mahantango Formation, a gray, dark gray, brown, and olive laminated shale; siltstone; and very fine-grained sandstone or claystone containing marine fossils. The uppermost clay layers of the Mahantango Formation are particularly rich in fossils. It overlie ...

The Pope Mega Group is a geologic unit found in the Illinois Basin of southern Illinois, southwestern Indiana, and western Kentucky.Stamm, N. 2020b''Geologic Unit: Menard, National Geologic Map Database''Willman, H.B., Atherton, Elwood, Buschbach, T.C., Collinson, Charles, Frye, J.C., Hopkins, M.E., Lineback, J.A., and Simon, J.A., 1975, ''Handbook of Illinois stratigraphy'': ''Illinois Geological Survey Bulletin'', no. 95, 261 p. In Indiana and Kentucky its equitant is the Buffalo Wallow Group. This unit grades from sandstones at its base into mix of limestones and sandstone and then a shale at its top. In Southern Illinois oil wells are drilled into the Tar Springs formation. Stratigraphy Kinkaid Formation Also known at the Kinkaid Limestone, this unit is made up of several smaller members. This unit ranges from 0' - 230 ' thick. The Grove Church Shale is at the top, followed by Members, Goreville Limestone, Cave Hill Shale, and Negli Creek Limestone. Tobinsport Formation ...
