A fortification is a military construction or building designed for the defense of territories in warfare, and is also used to establish rule in a region during peacetime. The term is derived from Latin ''fortis'' ("strong") and ''facere'' ("to make"). Gradište (Binačko)
Pogradja Castle ( al, Pogragjë, Kalaja e Pogragjës) or (Serbo-Croatian: Podgrađe; sr-cyr, Подграђе) is a fortress located near village of Pogragjë, 10 kilometers south-east of Gjilan, Kosovo. It was built on a hill overlooking the confluence of a stream in Morava e Binçës and dates back to 6th century. It is designated as Protected Archaeological Site, under protection of the Republic of Kosovo. Layout The fortress is situated on a hill that rises about 50 meters above the river valley. It consists of the Lower Town, surrounded by walls and a more preserved citadel (Upper Town) at the top of the hill. The layout of Upper Town is based on irregular pentagon that follows the shape of the hilltop, with three vertices (southwest, northwest and northeast) reinforced with towers. Vojinović Tower
Vushtrri Castle ( sq, Kalaja e Vushtrrisë; ) or Old Tower ( sq, Kulla e Vjetër; ) is a city fortifications in Vushtrri, Kosovo. It was the seat of despot Đurađ Branković (1427–1456). Later chroniclers (Ami Boué, Aleksandar Giljferding) are noted that the fort itself is derived from the times of Dušan, and that ''it is an old fortress with a tower in the middle of the town''. History The building of the fortress is traditionally attributed to the Vojinović brothers, to whom is also attributed the nearby Vojinović Bridge, while its style places it at the end of the 14th or early 15th century. Orahovac
Rahovec ( sq-definite, Rahoveci) or Orahovac (Serbian Cyrillic: Ораховац) is a town and municipality located in the District of Prizren in western Kosovo. According to the 2011 census, the town of Rahovec has 15,892 inhabitants, while the municipality has 56,208 inhabitants. Name The Serbian name of the town, ''Orahovac'', is derived from the Serbian '' orah'', meaning "walnut". The Albanian name ''Rahovec'' comes from an Albanised pronunciation of ''Orahovac''. Zatrič (fortress)
Zatrič or Zatriq (Serbian Cyrillic: ; sq, Zatriqi) is a fortress in Kosovo, whose ruins are located near the village Zatrić (old name: Zatrič), ten kilometers north of Orahovac. It is located at the top of Gradište, 1,013 meters above sea level, which dominates the valley of White Drin and Prizren. Layout Zatrič consists of the upper town, located at the very top, around which down town was spread. Top Gradište has a shape that resembles a sharp tooth or beak, with southern and eastern sides protected by isolated and sharp rocks that, in some places, reach up to 50 meters. Gjilan
Gjilan, or Gnjilane ( sr-cyr, Гњилане) is the eighth largest city in Kosovo and seat of Gjilan Municipality and Gjilan District. Name Ottoman chronicler Evliya Çelebi mentions ''Morava'' as a settlement of the Sanjak of Vučitrn.
