27th Sundance Film Festival
The 27th annual Sundance Film Festival took place from January 20, 2011 until January 30, 2011 in Park City, Utah, with screenings in Salt Lake City, Utah, Ogden, Utah, and Sundance, Utah. The festival opened with five screenings, one from each category in competition: ''Sing Your Song'', '' Pariah'', ''The Guard'', ''Project Nim'', and Shorts Program I. The New Frontier category opened with ''All That Is Solid Melts into Air''. The closing night film was '' The Son of No One''. There were 750 sponsors of the festival and 1,670 volunteers. Attendance was initially estimated at 60,000 people. Films 10,279 films were submitted. 3,812 feature films were submitted, including 1,943 from the US and 1,869 internationally. From these, 118 feature films were selected and include 95 world premieres. 6,467 short films were submitted, 81 short films were selected to be screened and 12 shorts are viewable on YouTube. ''Sing Your Song'' is a 2011 documentary that tells the story of Harry Belafonte. The film recounts his life and legacy, not only as a great entertainer, but as an important activist in the Civil Rights Movement. This inspirational biographical film begins with Belafonte's birth into poverty in Harlem in 1927, and childhood years in Jamaica, sent there by his immigrant mother. Director Susanne Rostock takes the viewer through his discovery of theater and training as an actor as a young man, and on to his career and success as a singer. Braden King (born 1971 North Carolina) is a New York-based filmmaker, photographer and visual artist. His feature film, ''Here'' (2011), starring Ben Foster and Lubna Azabal, premiered at the 2011 Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals and was distributed theatrically by Strand Releasing in 2012. A multimedia installation version of the project, ''Here The Story Sleeps ', premiered at The Museum of Modern Art in 2010 and toured internationally with live soundtrack accompaniment by composer Michael Krassner and Boxhead Ensemble. ''Here'' is a 2011 American drama adventure film directed by Braden King who also co-wrote the movie with Dani Valent. The film stars Ben Foster and Lubna Azabal. Synopsis Will Shepard (Foster), a solitary young man who lives in the San Francisco bay area, travels to Armenia to undertake a mapping survey in the rural areas of the country to confirm ground features and coordinates with GPS satellite data. There he meets Gadarine Nazarian (Azabal), a spirited Armenian ex-pat and professional photographer, who has returned home to face family issues. She decides to accompany Will on his journey, acting as his interpreter, while taking photographs too. They fall in love as they wander the countryside. Their affair lasts several days, but he has to move on. Production The film was shot on location in Armenia. Maryam Keshavarz ( fa, مریم کشاورز) is an American filmmaker(Iranian pedigreed) best known for her 2011 film '' Circumstance'' distributed by Participant Media and Roadside Attractions, which won the Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival. Samuel Levinson (born January 8, 1985) is an American actor and filmmaker. He is the son of Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson. In 2010, he received his first writing credit as a co-writer for the action comedy film '' Operation: Endgame''. Mike Cahill (born July 5, 1979) is an American filmmaker. Early life and education Mike Cahill was born in New Haven, Connecticut on July 5, 1979. His first forays into filmmaking were with Fisher-Price and VHS camcorders when he was young. He gained his first credit as a documentarian at the age of 17, when he and a friend directed a film titled ''The Pocket'', about D.C go-go music. After high school, Cahill studied economics at Georgetown University, graduating in 2001. While a student there he formed a close relationship with professional colleague and friend Brit Marling, whom he met at a Georgetown film festival, and the two began working on short films together where Marling would act and Cahill would direct.
