Elstree Studios (Shenley Road)
Elstree Studios on Shenley Road, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire is a British film and television production centre operated by Elstree Film Studios Limited. One of several facilities historically referred to as Elstree Studios, the Shenley Road studios originally opened in 1925. The studio complex has passed through many owners during its lifetime, and is now owned by Hertsmere Borough Council. Known as the studios used for filming Alfred Hitchcock's '' Blackmail'' (1929)—the first British talkie, ''Star Wars'' (1977), ''The'' ''Shining'' (1980) and ''Indiana Jones'' (its largest stage is known as the George Lucas Soundstage), the studios are used both for film and television productions. Lillian Hall-Davis
Lillian Hall-Davis (23 June 1898 – 25 October 1933) was an English actress during the silent film era, featured in major roles in English film and a number of German, French and Italian films. Born Lilian Hall Davis, the daughter of a London taxi driver, her films included a part-colour version of ''Pagliacci'' (1923), ''The Passionate Adventure'' (1924), ''Blighty (film), Blighty'' (1927), ''The Ring (1927 film), The Ring'' (1927) and ''The Farmer's Wife'' (1928), the latter two both directed by Alfred Hitchcock, who at the time considered her his "favourite actress." She had a lead role in a "lavish production" of ''Quo Vadis (1924 film), Quo Vadis'' (1924), an Italian film directed by Gabriellino D'Annunzio and Georg Jacoby. Betty Balfour (born Florence Lilian Woods; 27 March 1902 – 4 November 1977) was an English screen actress, popular during the silent era, and known as the "British Mary Pickford" and "Britain's Queen of Happiness". She was best known to audiences for her '' Squibs'' series of films. Life and career Balfour was the most popular actress in Britain in the 1920s, and in 1927 she was named by the ''Daily Mirror'' as the country's favourite world star. Her talent was most evident in the ''Squibs'' comedy series produced by George Pearson, while in his '' Love, Life and Laughter'' (1923), rediscovered in 2014, and ''Reveille'' (1924), she demonstrated a serious side to her character. Julie Aileen Kelly (1 November 1913 – 22 October 1991), known professionally as Judy Kelly, was an Australian-born British actress. She arrived in Britain in 1932 after winning a competition organised by the Australian British Empire Films, which included 3 months tuition at the British International Studios at Elstree. She appeared in a number of films for British International Pictures during the 1930s. She was sometimes cast as a love interest for the comedian Leslie Fuller, and also appeared alongside the musical stars Gene Gerrard and Stanley Lupino. Montague (Monty) Banks (18 July 1897 – 7 January 1950), born Mario Bianchi, was a 20th century Italian-born American comedian, film actor, director and producer who achieved success in the UK and the United States. Career Banks was born Mario Bianchi in Cesena, Italy. In 1914, Bianchi emigrated to the United States, first trying his luck on the New York stage. George Thomas Moore Marriott (14 September 1885 – 11 December 1949) was an English character actor best remembered for the series of films he made with Will Hay. His first appearance with Hay was in the film '' Dandy Dick'' (1935), but he was a significant supporting performer in Hay's films from 1936 to 1940, and while he starred with Hay during this period he played a character called "Harbottle" that was based on a character Marriott usually played. His character Harbottle was originally created by Hay when he used the character in his "The fourth form at St. Michael's" sketches in the 1920s.
