This is a non-exhaustive list of known dolphinariums worldwide. Many of these places are more than just dolphinariums; the list includes themeparks, marine mammal parks, zoos or aquariums that may also have more than one species of dolphin. The current status of parks marked with an asterisk (*) is unknown; these parks may have closed down, moved, changed names or no longer house any dolphins. Due to the large number of facilities worldwide, this list may not be complete. Facilities only housing porpoises are not listed. Dolphinarium
A dolphinarium is an aquarium for dolphins. The dolphins are usually kept in a pool, though occasionally they may be kept in pens in the open sea, either for research or public performances. Some dolphinariums consist of one pool where dolphins perform for the public, others are part of larger parks, such as marine mammal parks, zoos or theme parks, with other animals and attractions as well. While cetaceans have been held in captivity since the 1860s, the first commercial dolphinarium was opened only in 1938. Their popularity increased rapidly until the 1960s. Since the 1970s, increasing concern for animal welfare led to stricter regulation, which in several countries ultimately resulted in the closure of some dolphinariums. Despite this trend, dolphinariums are still widespread in Europe, Japan and North America. Nanjing Underwater World () is an aquarium near the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing. Underwater World is on the south side of Purple Mountain within walking distance of the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum. Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium
is a public aquarium located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It opened in 2015 as a successor to the Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium, which had been open for 88 years. Exhibits Inherited from the Marinepia Matsushima Aquarium are Commerson's dolphins and finless porpoises, along with fish from the Sanriku region. The facility is a two-story building with 100 fish tanks. Inside there is a dolphin and sea lion show pool that can accommodate about 1,000 people. Captive blue sharks The aquarium has a focus on rearing and exhibiting blue sharks as representative fish from Sanriku.
