List Of Directorates-general Of The Council Of The European Union
The General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, also known as Council Secretariat, assists the Council of the European Union, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the European Council and the President of the European Council. The General Secretariat is headed by the Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union. The Secretariat is divided into seven directorates-general, each administered by a director-general. The Secretariat is based in Brussels, in the Europa building. The respective secretariats of the Schengen Agreement and of now-defunct Western European Union and European Political Cooperation have along the years been integrated with the Council Secretariat. The current Secretary-General is Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen, who was appointed on 1 July 2015. He succeeded Uwe Corsepius. Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen
Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen (born 30 October 1962) is a Danish diplomat who has served as Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union from 2015 to 2022. Early life and education Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen was born on 30 October 1962 in Aden, Colony of Aden (now Yemen). His father was a Lutheran missionary and his mother was a teacher. After the outbreak of the North Yemen Civil War, the family returned to Denmark. They settled in North Jutland, where Tranholm-Mikkelsen grew up in Denmark in a progressive, liberal family. Tranholm-Mikkelsen started his education in a Protestant school, then earned a Master of Science in 1990 in international relations from the London School of Economics. Two years later, he obtained a Masters of Science in Political Science from Aarhus University in Denmark. Besides Danish, he speaks English, German, French, some Spanish, Dutch and Chinese. The European Union Civil Service Tribunal was a specialised court within the Court of Justice of the European Union. It was established on 2 December 2005. It ceased to exist on 1 September 2016. Legal basis The Treaty of Nice provides for the creation of judicial panels in certain specific areas. This provision is later amended and codified in Article 257 ("specialised courts") of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union by the Treaty of Lisbon: The Council of the European Union on 2 November 2004, adopted on that basis a decision establishing the European Union Civil Service Tribunal. The Secretariat-General (SG) is a service department of the European Commission. The SG is based in the Berlaymont in Brussels (Belgium). The SG supports the whole of the Commission, and in particular the 27 Commissioners. The head of the SG is the Secretary-General of the European Commission. The SG, under the remit of the President, has a high degree of importance in the Commission. It organises meetings, controls the agenda and is responsible for the minutes. {{Politics of the European Union In the politics of the European Union, an Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) is the formal procedure for negotiating amendments to the EU's founding treaties. Under the treaties, an IGC is called into being by the European Council, and is composed of representatives of the member states, with the Commission, and to a lesser degree the Parliament also participating. An IGC will conclude with a meeting of the European Council, at which any political issues requiring resolution at the level of Heads of State or Government will be resolved, and final political agreement will be reached. The European Union is a geo-political entity covering a large portion of the European continent. It is founded upon numerous treaties and has undergone expansions and secessions that have taken it from six member states to 27, a majority of the states in Europe. The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (HR/VP) is the chief co-ordinator and representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) within the European Union (EU). The position is currently held by Josep Borrell Fontelles. The Treaty of Amsterdam had established the position of High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy. Common Foreign And Security Policy
The Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) is the organised, agreed foreign policy of the European Union (EU) for mainly security and defence diplomacy and actions. CFSP deals only with a specific part of the EU's external relations, which domains include mainly Trade and Commercial Policy and other areas such as funding to third countries, etc. Decisions require unanimity among member states in the Council of the European Union, but once agreed, certain aspects can be further decided by qualified majority voting. Foreign policy is chaired and represented by the EU's High Representative, currently Josep Borrell. The CFSP sees the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) as responsible for the territorial defence of Europe and reconciliation.
