At the time of the 1981 Census of India, the Malappuram district was divided into 4 Tehsil, Taluks namely, Eranad Taluk, Eranad, Perinthalmanna taluk, Perinthalmanna, Tirur Taluk, Tirur, and Ponnani taluk, Ponnani. The Taluks were further classified into several Revenue Villages which were again a combination of some ''Desom''s. This is a list of ''Desom''s and their curresponding Revenue Villages of Malappuram district in the year 1981. ''Desom''s included in the Municipal towns of Malappuram District in 1981 are not included in this list. In 1981, Malappuram District had four Municipal Towns, Malappuram and Manjeri in Eranad Taluk, Tirur in Tirur Taluk, and Ponnani in Ponnani taluk. Background ''Desom''s were the basic unit of Revenue Divisions in the Malabar District during British Raj. ''Desom''s were usually named on the basis of smaller towns or forest area in that region. Malappuram (), is one of the 14 districts in the Indian state of Kerala, with a coastline of . It is the most populous district of Kerala, which is home to around 13% of the total population of the state. The district was formed on 16 June 1969, spanning an area of about .
