Airport
An airport is an aerodrome with extended facilities, mostly for commercial air transport. Airports usually consists of a landing area, which comprises an aerially accessible open space including at least one operationally active surface such as a runway for a plane to take off and to land or a helipad, and often includes adjacent utility buildings such as control towers, hangars and terminals, to maintain and monitor aircraft. Palmietfontein Airport ( af, Palmietfontein Lughawe) was an airport situated to the south of Johannesburg (Katlehong), South Africa, from 1945 to 1952. Latitude: -26° 20' 7.20" S Longitude: 28° 08' 28.80" E History Palmietfontein Airport was a wartime air force base which was converted to a temporary airport to serve Johannesburg whilst the new airport, Jan Smuts Airport (now O. R. Tambo International Airport), was being built. The airport serving Johannesburg at the time, Rand Airport, was unable to accommodate the size of aircraft to be operated on a new service to Great Britain. Al Bateen Executive Airport
Al Bateen Executive Airport ( ar, مطار البطين, ) is a dedicated business jet international airport located south east of the city centre of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The airport is on the Abu Dhabi island. Other tenants include aviation assets of the UAE government. It opened in 1970 as Abu Dhabi International Airport (not to be confused with the current Abu Dhabi International Airport) to replace the city's previous airport. Abu Dhabi Airfield
Abu Dhabi Airfield was the first airport in Abu Dhabi, operating from 1955 to 1969. The original terminal building remains intact, having been preserved in the center of the television and radio complex of Abu Dhabi Media Company, off Muroor Road near the junction with 17th street. History The history of aviation in Abu Dhabi began in 1955, when a 3,000-foot sand runway was built, along with a tiny sandstone terminal. When the airport opened, there was no control tower and air traffic controllers had to peak their head through a window to see if the runway was clear for landing or takeoff. A small wind turbine was next to the terminal in order to cool down the interior of the building. Matroosfontein
Elsie's River (Elsiesrivier in Afrikaans) is a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. History Elsies River was probably named after Elsje van Suurwaarde who farmed in the area in 1698. Baptized on 8 October 1662 in the Cape of Good Hope, Elsje was a matriarch who outlived her husbands and worked the land until she died. After her death, her farm passed through the hands of many landowners. In the mid, to late 1800s Elsies River operated as a halt. The Transatlantic Rail from Cape Town Central had a major stop at Elsies River Station. People with wagons from surrounding areas would gather to meet the train at the halt (hence the name Halt Road still today). There was ample water in the Elsies Kraal River to quench thirsty horses and the Arcadia Coffee House served much-needed refreshments for tired travellers. Wingfield Aerodrome
Wingfield Aerodrome was first the Cape Town Municipal Aerodrome, then Air Force Station Wingfield under the SAAF, before being used as a Fleet Air Arm base by the Royal Navy. After World War II, the aerodrome reverted to being the municipal airport for a while. The history of Wingfield is synonymous with the history of flight in South Africa, including pioneering attempts at commercial aviation. Early landing grounds in the Cape In the early days of aviation, all that was required for take off and landing was a level piece of land relatively free of obstructions. Kisangani Simisini Air Base is a military airport in the city of Kisangani, capital of the Tshopo Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Located in the western portion of Kisangani, north of the Congo River, most of its traffic has moved to Bangoka International Airport. The airport is now a military airfield, though it also serves humanitarian flights and some private operations. Thokoza
Thokoza, formerly Tokoza, is a township in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. Thokoza is at the location of the now-defunct Palmietfontein Airport. It is situated south east of Alberton, adjacent to Katlehong. Thokoza was the first black township which was established in the South. During the early 1990s Thokoza was the middle of unrest between the supporters of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), rival party of the African National Congress (ANC). History In 1955, the Germiston and Alberton municipalities swapped land and the latter received part of the land that made up the Natalspruit area, which was needed to form a new black township. From 1958-59, the Alberton municipality begun to develop a new township on the Palmietfontein section. Each plot was to be serviced with a basic water and sewerage infrastructure, with the building of a one bedroom shack and later one, two or three bedroom houses.
