A brewery or brewing company is a business that makes and sells beer. The place at which beer is commercially made is either called a brewery or a beerhouse, where distinct sets of brewing equipment are called plant. The commercial brewing of beer has taken place since at least 2500 BC; in ancient Mesopotamia, brewers derived social sanction and divine protection from the goddess Ninkasi. Sir John Falstaff is a fictional character who appears in three plays by William Shakespeare and is eulogised in a fourth. His significance as a fully developed character is primarily formed in the plays ''Henry IV, Part 1'' and '' Part 2'', where he is a companion to Prince Hal, the future King Henry V of England. Falstaff is also featured as the buffoonish suitor of two married women in ''The Merry Wives of Windsor''. Dubuque Star Brewery
The Dubuque Star Brewery, located in Dubuque, Iowa, is a building that for many years made Dubuque Star beers. The brewery is located just north of the Ice Harbor in Dubuque. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. with History Dubuque Star was established by Joseph Rhomberg in 1898. Until the beginning of Prohibition, the brewery produced Dubuque Star beer. As with many other breweries, the Dubuque Star brewery was forced to close down. Before Prohibition, there were 138 breweries in the state, but afterwards Dubuque Star was the only small brewery left in the state. With the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the brewery was reopened. Dobler Brewing Company
The Dobler Brewing Company was a small regional brewery, located in Albany, New Yorkâat the time the largest brewing hub in the country. Dobler was founded in 1865, and had an annual capacity of 25,000 barrels during its height. The brewery was one of only three breweries (along with Hedrick and Beverwyck) in Albany to survive Prohibition; Dobler was equipped with refrigeration capabilities in order to produce their line of lager, allowing them to convert to soda production. However, they never regained national distribution post-Prohibition. The Dobler Brewery closed in 1960, shortly after being sold to Hampden-Harvard Breweries of Willimansett, Massachusetts. The main building where the brewery once stood was demolished in 1960. However, an adjacent building which served as the carriage house for the delivery horses still stands. Cream City Brewing Company
The Cream City Brewing Company was an American brewery that was located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1853 until 1937. The brewery was one of seven to survive Prohibition in the city. One structure remains from the old brewery complex; a 25,000 square-foot horse stable built in 1910 that housed over forty horses to pull beer wagons. History The brewery was built in 1853 by George and Conrad Weir. It was called ''West Hill Brewery'' at the time and was owned by George Weir and Christopher Forster. Ownership of the brewery changed several times until John Beck bought out his partner Stephen Weber in 1861, and retained ownership until 1877 when it was sold to Jacob Veldt. Two years later it was sold to William Gerlach who renamed the brewery ''Cream City Brewing Company''. Covington Brewhouse
Covington Brewhouse was a brewery in the historic district of downtown Covington, Louisiana. The brewery itself is operated in the old Alexius Hardware building which is situated between the 100-year-old train depot, the landmark water tower, and the city's trailhead park. The brewery produces year round beers including Pontchartrain Pilsner, Bayou Bock, and Strawberry Ale. Several seasonal beers are also manufactured as well as various contract brews for restaurants in Covington, New Orleans, and the surrounding area. City Park Brewery
City Park Brewery, also known as the Louis Bergdoll Brewing Company was a brewery in north Philadelphia, Pennsylvania built in 1856. Several brewery buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as a historic district. Louis J. Bergdoll started his brewery business in 1849 at 508 Vine Street, Philadelphia, and briefly operated as Bergdoll and Schemm. From 1856 until Charles Psotta's death in 1876, the firm was known as Bergdoll and Psotta. In 1856 the firm built new quarters on 28th and 29th Streets near Fairmount Park and the Schuylkill River. In 1881 the firm was incorporated as City Park Brewery. Christian Heurich Brewing Company
The Christian Heurich Brewing Company was a Washington, D.C., brewery founded in 1872 and incorporated by Christian Heurich in 1890. First located near Dupont Circle on 20th Street NW, it expanded to a much larger site in Foggy Bottom in 1895 after a major fire. The new brewery was located along the Potomac River at 26th Street and D Street NW, where the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts now stands. The Heurich brewery was the largest in Washington's history, capable of producing 500,000 barrels of beer a year and 250 tons of ice daily. The Christian Heurich Brewing Co. closed in 1956, "because of a decline in sales and because of the knowledge that the government would seek to acquire the site of the brewery for the approaches to the new Theodore Roosevelt Bridge."
