This is a list of data breaches, using data compiled from various sources, including press reports, government news releases, and mainstream news articles. The list includes those involving the theft or compromise of 30,000 or more records, although many smaller breaches occur continually. Breaches of large organizations where the number of records is still unknown are also listed. In addition, the various methods used in the breaches are listed, with hacker (computer security), hacking being the most common. Most reported breaches are in North America, at least in part because of relatively strict disclosure laws in North American countries. Hacker (computer Security)
A security hacker is someone who explores methods for breaching defenses and exploiting weaknesses in a computer system or network. Hackers may be motivated by a multitude of reasons, such as profit, protest, information gathering, challenge, recreation, or evaluation of a system weaknesses to assist in formulating defenses against potential hackers. The subculture that has evolved around hackers is often referred to as the "computer underground". Longstanding controversy surrounds the meaning of the term " hacker." In this controversy, computer programmers reclaim the term ''hacker'', arguing that it refers simply to someone with an advanced understanding of computers and computer networks and that ''cracker'' is the more appropriate term for those who break into computers, whether computer criminals ( black hats) or computer security experts ( white hats). Atraf was a Tel Aviv-based LGBT website and app that offers a geo-located dating service and a nightlife index. The website started as an online nightlife magazine and later turned into an app. In 2014, Atraf was ranked #4 among "The 10 gayest things about Tel Aviv" by ''The Times of Israel''. In October 2021, profiles and information of users on the website were obtained by a hacker group by the name of "Black Shadow", and were later leaked to the public. Nightlife Index Since its launch, Atraf has supplied its users with updated information on various LGBT events and parties in Tel Aviv and all over Israel. Ashley Madison Data Breach
In July 2015, a group calling itself "The Impact Team" stole the user data of Ashley Madison, a commercial website billed as enabling extramarital affairs. The group copied personal information about the site's user base and threatened to release users' names and personally identifying information if Ashley Madison would not immediately shut down. On 18 and 20 August, the group leaked more than 60 gigabytes of company data, including user details. Because of the site's policy of not deleting users' personal information – including real names, home addresses, search history and credit card transaction records – many users feared being publicly shamed.
