The Vanderkloof Dam (originally the P. K. Le Roux Dam) is situated approximately downstream from Gariep Dam and is fed by the Orange River, South Africa's largest river. Vanderkloof Dam is the second-largest dam in South Africa (in volume), having the highest dam wall in the country at . The dam was commissioned in 1977; it has a capacity of and a surface area of when full. Other rivers flowing into this dam are the Berg River, two unnamed streams coming in from the direction of Reebokrand, the Knapsak River, Paaiskloofspruit, Seekoei River, Kattegatspruit and the Hondeblaf River, in a clockwise direction. R717 Road (South Africa)
The R717 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects Colesberg with Dewetsdorp via Trompsburg, Edenburg and Reddersburg. From Colesberg to Reddersburg, it follows the older route of the N1. Route It south-western terminus is in Colesberg, Northern Cape, at an interchange with the N1 National Route, the R369 Road and the R58 Road. From there, it heads north-north-east, crossing the Orange River into Free State. The first town it comes to is Philippolis. From this town, it heads north-east to Trompsburg. At Trompsburg, it receives the south-eastern terminus of the R704. From Trompsburg until Edenburg, the route parallels the N1. The N1 is a national route in South Africa that runs from Cape Town through Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Polokwane to Beit Bridge on the border with Zimbabwe. Norvalspont Railway Bridge
Norvalspont is a small town in Pixley ka Seme District Municipality in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The name is Afrikaans for ''Norval’s ferry'', and named after an enterprising Scot who constructed a ferry here in 1848. The settlement lies some 40 km east-north-east of Colesberg and 43 km west-north-west of Venterstad, on the southern bank of the Orange River, just below the Gariep Dam. At the end of the 19th Century Norvalspont became a strategic station on the Noupoort – Bloemfontein railway line. The first bridge across the Orange River was built in 1889 and allowed British soldiers and their horses to cross the Orange River on their first campaign against the Voortrekkers. People and goods had to be ferried across until the bridge was built. It later sunk and was destroyed during a flood.
