Community Radio
Community radio is a radio service offering a third model of radio broadcasting in addition to commercial and public broadcasting. Community stations serve geographic communities and communities of interest. They broadcast content that is popular and relevant to a local, specific audience but is often overlooked by commercial (or) mass-media broadcasters. Community radio stations are operated, owned, and influenced by the communities they serve. They are generally nonprofit and provide a mechanism for enabling individuals, groups, and communities to tell their own stories, to share experiences and, in a media-rich world, to become creators and contributors of media. Grand Rapids, Minnesota
Grand Rapids is a city in Itasca County, Minnesota, United States, and it is the county seat. The population is 11,126 according to the 2020 census. The city is named for the long rapids in the Mississippi River which was the uppermost limit of practical steamboat travel during the late 19th century. Today the rapids are hidden below the dam of UPM Paper Company. History Grand Rapids became a logging town, as the Mississippi River provided an optimal method of log shipment to population centers. Blandin paper mill opened in 1902. The Forest History Center is a State Historic Site and a living history museum that recreates life as it was in a turn of the 20th century logging camp. KBMF-LP (102.5 FM) is a non-commercial low-power community radio station that broadcasts terrestrially from a transmitter atop the historic Carpenters' Union Hall in Uptown Butte, Montana. Broadcasting 24/7, the station showcases 60+ unique freeform music programs, two one-hour weekly news programs, and a variety of community programs. KBMF-LP's FCC licensee is Butte America Foundation (BAmF), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The station's slogan is "America's Most Radio". History KBMF-LP 102.5 FM was established as the flagship project of the Butte America Foundation in August 2013. Boulder Creek is a small rural mountain community in the coastal Santa Cruz Mountains. It is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Cruz County, California, with a population of 5,429 as of the 2020 census. Throughout its history, Boulder Creek has been home to a logging town and a resort community, as well as a counter-culture haven. Today, it is identified as the gateway town to Big Basin Redwoods State Park. KBBG (88.1 FM) is a non-commercial educational radio station licensed to serve the community of Waterloo, Iowa. KBBG is owned by Afro American Community Broadcasting, Inc and is organized as a 501(C)3 tax-exempt organization. Jimmie Porter founded the corporation in 1977 with a group of 16 other Waterloo residents. He remained active in its leadership, along with a board of directors, until his death in 2007. KBBG began broadcasting on July 26, 1978 using a 10 watt transmitter, and upgraded on December 27, 1980 to 9,500 watts of power. KBBG is a member-supported station of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and is an affiliate of American Urban Radio Network (SBN).
