Communes Of Luxembourg
Luxembourg's 102 communes ( lb, Gemengen ; French: ''communes''; german: Gemeinden) conform to LAU Level 2Statec (2003), p. 9&10 and are the country's lowest administrative divisions. Communes rank below cantons in Luxembourg's hierarchy of administrative subdivisions. Communes are often re-arranged, being merged or divided as demanded by demographic change over time. Unlike the cantons, which have remained unchanged since their creation, the identity of the communes has not become ingrained within the geographical sensations of the average Luxembourger. The cantons are responsible for the ceremonial, administrative, and statistical aspects of government, while the communes provide local government services. The municipal system was adopted when Luxembourg was annexed into the French département of Forêts in 1795. Strassen ( lb, Stroossen ) is a commune and town in central Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Luxembourg. In 2016, Strassen's population counted 8500 citizens. The current mayor of Strassen is Nico Pundel ( CSV). Mondercange ( lb, Monnerech ; german: Monnerich) is a commune in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette in south-western Luxembourg. Diekirch
Diekirch ( lb, Dikrech or (locally) ; from ''Diet-Kirch'', i.e. "people's church") is a commune with town status in north-eastern Luxembourg, capital city of the canton Diekirch and, until its abolition in 2015, the district of Diekirch. The town is situated on the banks of the Sauer river. The town's heraldic shield, showing a crowned lion on a castle, was granted in 1988. It is based on the town's 14th-century seal and arms. In 2001, the town of Diekirch itself, which lies in the south of the commune, had a population of 6,068. in 1977, Diekirch was the first town in Luxembourg to have a pedestrian zone. Wiltz is a canton in northwestern Luxembourg. Its capital is the city of Wiltz. It covers an area of 264.55 km2, and it has a population of 16,735. Junglinster ( lb, Jonglënster) is a commune in central Luxembourg, which draws its name from its principal town, Junglinster. It is one of six communes in the Luxembourg canton of Grevenmacher. Walferdange ( lb, Walfer ; german: Walferdingen) is a commune and small town in central Luxembourg. Geography The commune of Walferdange is located north of Luxembourg City in the valley of the Alzette. It is part of the canton Luxembourg. The town of Walferdange lies in the center of the commune, other towns within the commune include Helmsange and Bereldange. History The commune of Walferdange was formed on 1 January 1851, when it was detached from the commune of Steinsel. The law forming Walferdange was passed on 25 November 1850. Although the commune first came into existence in 1851, there is evidence of prehistoric settlement as well as remains of a very large Roman villa. Bertrange (; lb, Bartreng ; german: Bartringen) is a commune and town in south-western Luxembourg. Ettelbruck
Ettelbruck ( lb, Ettelbréck , german: Ettelbrück ) is a commune with town status in central Luxembourg, with a population of inhabitants. History Until 1850, both Erpeldange and Schieren were part of the Ettelbruck commune as well, but both towns were detached from Ettelbruck by law on 1 July 1850. Nazi Germany occupied Ettelbruck on 10 May 1940. US forces first liberated the town on 11 September 1944 but Germany retook the town on 16 December 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. US General George S. Patton on Christmas Day, 25 December 1944, led US troops in the final liberation of Ettelbruck from Nazi occupation.
