August Karl Johann Valentin Köhler (4 March 1866 – 12 March 1948) was a German professor and early staff member of Carl Zeiss AG in Jena, Germany. He is best known for his development of the microscopy technique of Köhler illumination, an important principle in optimizing microscopic resolution power by evenly illuminating the field of view. This invention revolutionized light microscope design and is widely used in traditional as well as modern digital imaging techniques today. Theodor Seitz
Theodor Seitz (Mannheim, 12 September 1863 – Baden-Baden, 28 March 1949) was a German colonial governor. He studied law at the University of Heidelberg. He entered in the service of the Foreign Office and became on 9 May 1907 Imperial Governor of Kamerun. On 28 August 1910, he became Governor of German South West Africa (today Namibia) at Windhoek. At the outbreak of World War I, the colony was invaded by a British-South African force. The outnumbered German troops under command of Victor Franke had to capitulate on 9 July 1915. He remained in captivity until 1919, when all Germans were sent to Germany and the colony was annexed by the British. Bruno Von Schuckmann
Bruno von Schuckmann (3 December 1857, Rohrbeck, Arnswalde District – 6 June 1919, Stettin) was a German lawyer and consular officer. He was an imperial governor in German South West Africa and a member of the Prussian House of Representatives. In April 1890, Schuckmann moved as an "auxiliary worker" to the colonial department of the Federal Foreign Office, where he was promoted to the Legation Council in May 1891. As early as July 1891, he was sent to Cameroon to represent Governor Eugen von Zimmerer. Returning to Berlin at the end of January 1892, he became German Consul-General in Cape Town in October 1895. Back in Berlin, Schuckmann became Secret Legation Council in December 1899. On 17 December 1901 he went into temporary retirement. From 1904 to 1907 he held a seat in the Prussian House of Representatives for the Conservative Party. Eugen Von Zimmerer (restored)
Eugen Ritter von Zimmerer (24 November 1843 – 10 March 1918) was an attorney, prosecutor and judge in Bavaria before he entered the colonial service in 1887 when he was in his 40s. He served in German colonies of Kamerun and Togo before being appointed as governor of Kamerun, serving between 1890 and 1893. Following that, Zimmerer was assigned to posts in Brazil, Chile and Haiti before retiring and returning to Germany. Early life, education and career Eugen Ritter von Zimmerer was born on 24 November 1843 in Germersheim, the son of a Bavarian officer and his wife. He attended high school in Bayreuth. Julius Freiherr von Soden (5 February 1846 – 2 February 1921) was a German colonial administrator and politician. He was the Governor of the colonies of Kamerun and German East Africa, and later became ''Chef de Cabinet'' and Foreign Minister of the King of Württemberg. Youth and education Julius von Soden was born on 5 February 1846 in the barracks of the 7th Infantry Regiment in Ludwigsburg, where his father was lieutenant colonel. He was a member of the Evangelical Church. In 1849 the family moved to Stuttgart. His parents died early.
