Berkhamsted Rural District
Berkhamsted Rural District was a rural district in Hertfordshire, England from 1894 to 1974, covering an area to the west of the county. Until 1937 the official spelling of the district's name was Berkhampstead Rural District. Evolution Berkhampstead Poor law union, Poor Law Union had been created in 1835 following the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834. Under the Public Health Acts, Public Health Act 1872 sanitary districts were created, and the Board of guardians, boards of guardians of poor law unions were made responsible for public health and local government for any part of their district not included in an urban authority. The Berkhampstead Rural Sanitary District therefore covered the area of the Berkhampstead Poor Law Union except for the town of Tring, which had a Local board of health, local board. Flaunden
Flaunden is a village and a civil parish in Hertfordshire, England, close to the border with Buckinghamshire. Old Flaunden was on the banks of the River Chess in Buckinghamshire but owing to constant flooding, the settlement moved up the hill into Hertfordshire in the early 19th century. The new church at the top of the hill was built in 1838 and was the first church designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The former Baptist chapel in Flaunden dates from 1836 and closed in 1985. It is now a private residence but the chapel's graveyard remains alongside. Flamstead
Flamstead is a village and civil parish in north-west Hertfordshire, England, close to the junction of the A5 and the M1 motorway at junction 9. The name is thought by some historians to be a corruption of the original ''Verulamstead''. Flamstead stands on a ridge above the River Ver, which runs on its north side; to the south the village extends downhill to the adjoining hamlet of Trowley Bottom. The first documented record of the village was in 1006, and it was also recorded in the Domesday Book eighty years later. In the Middle Ages it was important enough for a market and fair to be held there, though it is now mainly a dormitory village for neighbouring towns, several of which can be reached by bus from the village. Chipperfield
Chipperfield is a village and civil parish in the Dacorum district of Hertfordshire, England, approximately five miles southwest of Hemel Hempstead and five miles north of Watford. It stands on a chalk plateau at the edge of the Chiltern Hills, between 130 and 160 metres above sea level. The village green is at the centre of Chipperfield on the edge of the 117 acre Chipperfield Common. The rural parish includes the hamlet of Tower Hill. Bovingdon
Bovingdon is a village in Hertfordshire, England, southwest of Hemel Hempstead, and it is a civil parish within the local authority area of Dacorum. It forms the largest part of the ward of Bovingdon, Flaunden and Chipperfield, which had a population of 4,600 at the 2001 census, increasing to 9,000 at the 2011 Census. Description The name is first mentioned in deeds from 1200 as ''Bovyndon''. It could originate from Old English ''Bufan dune'' meaning "above the down" or from ''Bofa's down'', the down belonging to Bofa. What used to be the Bobsleigh Inn on Box Lane, just east of the village, is a large house with some parts dating to the sixteenth century. It used to be a hotel and restaurant.
