Cities in Vietnam are identified by the government as settlements with considerable area and population that play important roles vis-a-vis politics, economy and culture. Status of cities falls into four categories: special, first class (), second class (), and third class (). Municipalities Centrally controlled cities (''thành phố trực thuộc trung ương'') or municipalities are cities with significant importance in terms of politics, economy and culture of Vietnam that are under direct control of the Vietnamese government. There are currently five centrally controlled municipalities. Municipal cities Municipal cities (subcities) in Vietnam are placed under the municipality's government. Provincial cities Provincial cities in Vietnam are placed under the province's government. Bắc Kạn
Bắc Kạn () is the capital of Bắc Kạn Province, Vietnam. The province's only city, it is bordered by Bạch Thông District to the north, north-east and west and Chợ Mới District to the south-east and south-west. Bắc Kạn is 160 kilometers away from Ha Noi. As of 2019 it had a population of 45,036 people. The town traces its origins to a fort established in 1880 and upgraded to city on 11 March 2015. Cà Mau
Cà Mau () is a city in southern Vietnam. It is the capital of Cà Mau Province, a province in the Mekong Delta region, in the southernmost part of Vietnam's inland territory. The city is characterised by its system of transport canals, and most goods are transported there by boats and barges. Buôn Ma Thuột
Buôn Ma Thuột () (formerly Lac Giao) or sometimes Buôn Mê Thuột or Ban Mê Thuột, is the capital city of Đắk Lắk Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Bến Tre
Bến Tre () is the capital city of Bến Tre Province, in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam. Located southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, the city covers an area of 65.75 km2 (25.39 sq mi) and has a population of 124,499 at the 2019 census.
