Garden City, Minnesota
Garden City is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Garden City Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, United States. Its population was 255 as of the 2010 census. History A post office called Garden City was established in 1857. The community was named from the garden-like setting of the original town site. The First Baptist Church building was completed in 1868. The Blue Earth County Fair has been held in Garden City since 1860 with the exception of a few years the fair was cancelled. In 1921, on a visit from London, Henry Wellcome donated land he had purchased to the hamlet of Garden City to build a consolidated school. The school that was built on the site became Wellcome Memorial school, eventually combining with Rapidan, Vernon Center, and Lake Crystal school districts. Goodhue County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 47,582. Its county seat is Red Wing. Nearly all of Prairie Island Indian Community is within the county. Goodhue County comprises the Red Wing, MN Micropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN- WI Combined Statistical Area. History The county was created on March 5, 1853, with territory partitioned from Wabasha County. Frontenac, Minnesota
Frontenac is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Florence Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota, United States, on the Mississippi River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 282. History James Wells established a trading post in the location that would become Frontenac before 1850. He dealt mostly with Native Americans until the railroad was built in the early 1870s. In 1854, the Garrard brothers came upon the area during a hunting trip and bought large tracts of land. By 1857, the community was permanently established with the name of ''Westervelt'' in 1855 to honor the then postmaster, Evert V. Jackson County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,989. Its county seat is Jackson. History The county was created on May 23, 1857. It was named for Henry Jackson, the first merchant in St. Paul. Geography Jackson County lies on the south side of Minnesota. Its south border abuts the north border of the state of Iowa. The Des Moines River flows south-southeasterly through the central part of the county, thence into Iowa. The county terrain is hilly and carved with drainages and gullies. Lake County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,905. Its county seat is Two Harbors. History Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area had long been inhabited by Native American groups. At the time of European contact, the principal Native American groups in the region were the Dakota (Sioux) and Ojibwe (also called Anishinabe or Chippewa). The economy of these groups was based on hunting, fishing and gathering, with wild rice being of particular importance. The first Europeans to explore the area were the French in the late 17th century who were followed by trappers, fur traders, missionaries, and explorers. Finland is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Crystal Bay and Beaver Bay townships, Lake County, Minnesota, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 195. Geography The community of Finland is located inland from Lake Superior's North Shore and northeast of the city of Two Harbors. State Highway 1, County Road 6, and County Road 7 are three of the main routes in the community. State Highway 1 continues northwest from Finland to Ely. Esko, Minnesota
Esko is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Thomson Township, Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,869. The community is between Cloquet and Duluth at the junction of Interstate 35 and County Road 1 (Thomson Road). Esko is six miles east of Cloquet and 16 miles southwest of Duluth. Carlton County Road 61 serves as a main route in the community. Most Esko residents are descendants of Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish immigrants who settled the area during the early 20th century. The nearby community of Thomson also has a large Scandinavian presence. Most students in kindergarten through 12th grade attend classes at Winterquist Elementary School and Lincoln High School of Esko. Esko is well known for its successful high school sports teams.
