Scholars debate the scope of the word ''castle'', but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble. This is distinct from a palace, which is not fortified; from a fortress, which was not always a residence for royalty or nobility; from a ''pleasance'' which was a walled-in residence for nobility, but not adequately fortified; and from a fortified settlement, which was a public defence – though there are many similarities among these types of construction. Maasilinna Castle
Maasilinn Castle (german: Soneburg) is located in Maasi village in Orissaare Parish, Saare County, Estonia. It served as the centre of Eastern Saaremaa and Muhu in Medieval times. History It was established in 1345 by Livonian Order' ''Landmeister'' Burchard von Dreileben after the St. George's Night Uprising was quelled. It was meant to replace the former seat of the local vogt in Pöide Castle, which had been destroyed by the Oeselians. The first castle was built from wood and was reconstructed from stone. The castle was destroyed twice in the Livonian War. It remained in ruins thereafter. Pöide (german: Peude) is a village in Saaremaa Parish, Saare County, on the eastern part of Saaremaa Island, Estonia. Before the administrative reform in 2017, the village was in Pöide Parish. Pärnu Castle
Pärnu Castle () was a castle in Pärnu, in nowadays Estonia. Also currently called "The Red Tower," it was built in the 15th century originally as a prison. It is the last defensive tower remaining of the Hanseactic town "New-Pärnu." In the 17th century, the tower had four stories and a prison cell 6 meters deep. Põltsamaa Castle
Põltsamaa Castle ( et, Põltsamaa linnus; german: Schloss Oberpahlen), also Põltsamaa Order Castle, ( et, Põltsamaa ordulinnus), is a castle in Põltsamaa, Jõgeva County, in eastern Estonia. History The castle was founded by the Livonian Order in 1272, as a purely defensive crusader fortress. During the course of the Livonian War, the castle was for a period occupied by Polish troops and between 1570 and 1578 served as the official residence of Duke Magnus of Holstein, who aspired to create a Livonian kingdom with the help of Tsar Ivan the Terrible of Russia. In 1623, king Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden gave the estate to Field Marshal Herman Wrangel as a gift. Wrangel started to transform the castle from a medieval fortress into a stately late-renaissance home. During the course of the Great Northern War, however, the castle was burnt and the interiors destroyed.
