Caricature
A caricature is a rendered image showing the features of its subject in a simplified or exaggerated way through sketching, pencil strokes, or other artistic drawings (compare to: cartoon). Caricatures can be either insulting or complimentary, and can serve a political purpose, be drawn solely for entertainment, or for a combination of both. Caricatures of politicians are commonly used in editorial cartoons, while caricatures of movie stars are often found in entertainment magazines. In literature, a ''caricature'' is a distorted representation of a person in a way that exaggeration, exaggerates some characteristics and oversimplifies others. Etymology The term is derived for the Italian ''caricare''—to charge or load. Dušan Petričić
Dušan Petričić ( sr-cyr, Душан Петричић; born 10 May 1946) is a Serbian illustrator and caricaturist. He has illustrated numerous children's books and his caricatures have appeared in various newspapers and magazines from ''Politika'' to ''The New York Times'', ''The Wall Street Journal'' and the ''Toronto Star''. Petričić has received numerous awards for his work including an IBBY Certificate of Honour, an ''Alberta Book Award'' for his illustrations in Tim Wynne-Jones' ''On Tumbledown Hill'' and many others. In 1989 he won the Levstik Award in Slovenia for his illustrations of ''Guliver med pritlikavci'' ( Gulliver in Lilliput). Drew Friedman (cartoonist)
Drew Friedman is an American cartoonist and illustrator who first gained renown for his humorous artwork and "stippling"-like style of caricature, employing thousands of pen-marks to simulate the look of a photograph. In the mid-1990s, he switched to painting. Friedman's work has appeared in such periodicals as ''Entertainment Weekly'', ''Newsweek'', ''Time'', ''The New York Times'', ''The Wall Street Journal'', ''The New Yorker'', ''The New Republic'', ''The New York Observer'', ''Esquire'', ''RAW'', ''Rolling Stone'', ''The Village Voice'' and '' Mad''. Donald Bevan
Donald Joseph Bevan (January 16, 1920 Holyoke, Massachusetts – May 29, 2013 Studio City, California) was an American playwright whose works include the Broadway play ''Stalag 17'', co-written with Edmund Trzcinski, and adapted as a movie in 1953. He was also the caricaturist for the celebrity wall at Sardi's restaurant in New York City for over 20 years, the third of four such artists employed by Sardi's. A United States Army Air Forces veteran who served in World War II as a gunner of a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and as a prisoner of war in Germany after being shot down April 17, 1943, Bevan is buried at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California. Don Barclay (actor)
Don Barclay (born Donn Van Tassel Barclay, December 26, 1892 – October 16, 1975) was an American actor, artist and caricaturist whose many roles stretched the period from the Keystone Cops in 1915 to ''Mary Poppins'' in 1964 and whose many paintings and caricatures of celebrities filled establishments worldwide and are archived in the Library of Congress. Career The more experienced comedian, Don Barclay helped and later became roommates with a rookie actor in Bristol, England named Archie Leach. Barclay and Leach developed a two-man comedy show together in New York. Leach later became better known as Cary Grant and Grant rejoined Barclay beginning in 1920 in New York and Hollywood where they were often roommates. Sir David Alexander Cecil Low (7 April 1891 – 19 September 1963) was a New Zealand political cartoonist and caricaturist who lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years. Low was a self-taught cartoonist. Born in New Zealand, he worked in his native country before migrating to Sydney in 1911, and ultimately to London (1919), where he made his career and earned fame for his Colonel Blimp depictions and his satirising of the personalities and policies of German dictator Adolf Hitler, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, and other leaders of his times. David Levine (December 20, 1926 – December 29, 2009) was an American artist and illustrator best known for his caricatures in ''The New York Review of Books''. Daniel Stieglitz (born 4 March 1980 in Cham, (Germany)) is a caricature artist, director and writer. He studied animation, illustration and filmmaking at the Kunsthochschule Kassel in Hessia and graduated with the 45min movie "Spielzeugland Endstation" in 2008, which won Hessian Film Award in 2009. Dan Dunn (born 1957) is an American improvisational speed painter and the creator of Paintjam, a theatrical performance art show in which paintings are created in minutes on stage. Biography Studying painting at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, Dunn specialized in oil painting and watercolor, also doing sculpture and life drawing. While a student, he started drawing caricatures at Six Flags, Astroworld in 1977 as a college student; he continued through nine seasons. Dunn worked in advertising and graphic design but left that field to devote himself to caricatures full-time in 1989 when he launched a caricature artist talent agency, Caricatures Ink. Charles Williams (died 1830) was a British caricaturist, etcher and illustrator. He was chief caricaturist between 1799 and 1815 for the leading British publisher S. W. Fores. He worked in a style similar to James Gillray. In his earlier works, Williams used the pseudonyms Ansell or Argus; with George Cruikshank and others he illustrated ''The Every-Day Book'' by William Hone, edited 1825–26. Cem Sultan (also spelled Djem or Jem) or Sultan Cem or Şehzade Cem (December 22, 1459 – February 25, 1495, ; ota, جم سلطان, Cem sulṭān; tr, Cem Sultan; french: Zizim), was a claimant to the Ottoman throne in the 15th century. Cem was the third son of Sultan Mehmed II and younger half-brother of Sultan Bayezid II, and thus a half-uncle of Sultan Selim I of Ottoman Empire. After being defeated by Bayezid, Cem went in exile in Egypt and Europe, under the protection of the Mamluks, the Knights Hospitaller of St. John on the island of Rhodes, and ultimately the Pope.
