Auckland Council
Auckland Council ( mi, Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau) is the local government council for the Auckland Region in New Zealand. It is a territorial authority that has the responsibilities, duties and powers of a regional council and so is a unitary authority, according to the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009, which established the council. The governing body consists of a mayor and 20 councillors, elected from 13 wards. There are also 149 members of 21 local boards who make decisions on matters local to their communities. It is the largest council in Oceania, with a $3 billion annual budget, $29 billion of ratepayer equity, and 9,870 full-time staff as of 30 June 2016. The council began operating on 1 November 2010, combining the functions of the previous regional council and the region's seven city and district councils into one "super council" or "super city". Ward (electoral Subdivision)
A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. In some countries, wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area (e.g. William Morris Ward in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England). It is common in the United States for wards to simply be numbered. Howick Ward
Howick Ward is an Auckland Council ward which elects two councillors and covers the Howick Local Board. Sharon Stewart and Maurice Williamson are the current councillors. Demographics Howick ward covers and had an estimated population of as of with a population density of people per km2. Howick ward had a population of 140,970 at the 2018 New Zealand census, an increase of 13,845 people (10.9%) since the 2013 census, and an increase of 27,465 people (24.2%) since the 2006 census. There were 43,587 households, comprising 69,399 males and 71,568 females, giving a sex ratio of 0.97 males per female. The median age was 37.3 years (compared with 37.4 years nationally), with 27,279 people (19.4%) aged under 15 years, 28,542 (20.2%) aged 15 to 29, 66,066 (46.9%) aged 30 to 64, and 19,086 (13.5%) aged 65 or older. Jami-Lee Ross
Jami-Lee Matenga Ross (born 1985) is a New Zealand former politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Botany electorate in Auckland from the March 2011 Botany by-election, when he became the youngest MP at the time, until 2020. He was previously a local government politician on the Auckland Council and, before that, was on the Manukau City Council from the age of 18. Elected as a member of the National Party, Ross resigned from the party's caucus on 16 October 2018 after he accused National leader Simon Bridges of corruption. Ross has been accused of harassment and bullying behaviour toward staff. He sat in Parliament as an independent. Ross announced the establishment of a new political party, Advance New Zealand, in 2020. Dick Quax
Theodorus Jacobus Leonardus "Dick" Quax (1 January 1948 – 28 May 2018) was a Dutch-born New Zealand runner, one-time world record holder in the 5000 metres, and local-body politician. Quax stood for Parliament for the ACT Party in 1999 and 2002. He was a Manukau City councillor from 2001 to 2007, when he stood unsuccessfully for mayor, and was a councillor on the Auckland Council from 2011 until his death in 2018. Athletic career Quax won four New Zealand national athletics titles: the 5000 m in 1972, 1973, and 1974; and the one mile in 1969. At the 1970 British Commonwealth Games, Quax won the silver medal in the 1500 metres. In the 5000 m, at the 1972 Summer Olympics he was eliminated in the heats, but he won silver in 1976. He did not compete in 1980 in Moscow due to the West's boycott. In 1977 at Stockholm Quax set a world record of 13:12.9 in the 5000 m. Denise Lee
Denise Adrienne Lee (previously Denise Krum; born 4 December 1970) is a New Zealand politician who was the National Party's Member of Parliament for the Maungakiekie electorate from 2017 to 2020. She was previously an Auckland Council local body councillor. Early years Lee was born in Paeroa in 1970 and is the daughter of Graeme Lee, who was also a Member of Parliament. She was married and known as Denise Krum during the start of her political career, before returning to her maiden name following the 2016 local election. During the 2008 general election, Lee stood in Maungakiekie for United Future. Lee was President of United Future at the time. She later left United Future and joined the New Zealand National Party. Paul Young (politician)
Paul Young is a New Zealand politician who was an Auckland Councillor and a board member of the Counties Manukau District Health Board. Early life and education Then aged 25, Young immigrated from Taiwan in 1989. The councillor operates his own business "Paul Young International", which operates events around New Zealand. He studied marketing at the University of Auckland and is married with two children. Political career Young contested the 2011 Botany by-election under the New Citizen Party and came third. He later contested the Botany seat in the 2011 general election and 2014 general election, while affiliated to the Conservative Party. Young was unsuccessful in his attempts. Penny Bright
Penny Bright (8 September 1954 – 4 October 2018) was a New Zealand activist who protested for increased government transparency, against the Spring Bok tour, and for other left-wing issues. Biography Bright studied at Kuranui College, and organised Halt All Racist Tours while she was a high school student. Following high school, Bright worked as a sheet-metal welder and as a welding tutor at Manukau Polytechnic. In 1998, Bright and others founded the Water Pressure Group. The Water Pressure Group was formed to challenge Auckland City Council's water company Metrowater and its use of user pays charges. In 2000, Bright and the Water Pressure Group attempted to hose the Bolivian embassy in Remuera using a vintage firetruck in protest against locked-out workers in Bolivia. ''The New Zealand Herald'' is a daily newspaper published in Auckland, New Zealand, owned by New Zealand Media and Entertainment, and considered a newspaper of record for New Zealand. It has the largest newspaper circulation of all newspapers in New Zealand, peaking at over 200,000 copies in 2006, although circulation of the daily ''Herald'' had declined to 100,073 copies on average by September 2019. Damian Light
Damian Francis Light (born 31 October 1983) is a New Zealand politician who was the leader of the United Future party from August 2017 until the party's dissolution in November 2017. He became party leader following the resignation of Peter Dunne. Light had previously served as the president of the party. He was the first openly gay leader of a political party in New Zealand. Light later entered local politics, and in 2022 became the Chair of the Howick Local Board. Personal life Light was born and raised in Auckland. He attended Rosmini College in Takapuna.
