Computational Geometry
Computational geometry is a branch of computer science devoted to the study of algorithms which can be stated in terms of geometry. Some purely geometrical problems arise out of the study of computational geometric algorithms, and such problems are also considered to be part of computational geometry. While modern computational geometry is a recent development, it is one of the oldest fields of computing with a history stretching back to antiquity. Analysis of algorithms, Computational complexity is central to computational geometry, with great practical significance if algorithms are used on very large datasets containing tens or hundreds of millions of points. Geometric Intersection Problems
Geometry (; ) is, with arithmetic, one of the oldest branches of mathematics. It is concerned with properties of space such as the distance, shape, size, and relative position of figures. A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a '' geometer''. Until the 19th century, geometry was almost exclusively devoted to Euclidean geometry, which includes the notions of point, line, plane, distance, angle, surface, and curve, as fundamental concepts. During the 19th century several discoveries enlarged dramatically the scope of geometry. One of the oldest such discoveries is Carl Friedrich Gauss' ("remarkable theorem") that asserts roughly that the Gaussian curvature of a surface is independent from any specific embedding in a Euclidean space. Joseph O'Rourke (professor)
Joseph O'Rourke is the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Professor of Computer Science at Smith College and the founding chair of the Smith computer science department. His main research interest is computational geometry. One of O'Rourke's early results was an algorithm for finding the minimum bounding box of a point set in three dimensions when the box is not required to be axis-aligned. The problem is made difficult by the fact that the optimal box may not share any of its face planes with the convex hull of the point set. Nevertheless, O'Rourke found an algorithm for this problem with running time O(n^3). In 1985, O'Rourke was the program chair of the first annual Symposium on Computational Geometry. Mariette Yvinec is a French researcher in computational geometry at the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA) in Sophia Antipolis. Jean-Daniel Boissonnat
Jean-Daniel Boissonnat (born 18 May 1953) is a French computer scientist, who works as a director of research at the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA). He is an invited professor of computational geometry at the Collège de France, holding the Chair in Informatics and Computational Sciences for 2016–2017. Boissonat was one of the founders of the CGAL project for implementing geometric algorithms. Markus Hendrik Overmars (; born 29 September 1958 in Zeist, Netherlands) is a Dutch computer scientist and teacher of game programming known for his game development application GameMaker. GameMaker lets people create computer games using a drag-and-drop interface. He is the former head of the ''Center for Geometry, Imaging, and Virtual Environments'' at Utrecht University, in the Netherlands. This research center concentrates on computational geometry and its application in areas like computer graphics, robotics, geographic information systems, imaging, multimedia, virtual environments, and games. Otfried Cheong
Otfried Cheong (formerly Otfried Schwarzkopf) is a German computational geometer working in South Korea at KAIST. He is known as one of the authors of the widely used computational geometry textbook ''Computational Geometry: Algorithms and Applications'' (with Mark de Berg, Marc van Kreveld, and Mark Overmars) and as the developer of Ipe, a vector graphics editor. Cheong completed his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin in 1992 under the supervision of Helmut Alt. Mark de Berg is a Dutch computational geometer, known as one of the authors of the textbook ''Computational Geometry: Algorithms and Applications'' (with Otfried Cheong, Marc van Kreveld, and Mark Overmars, Springer, 1997; 3rd ed., 2008).
