This is a list of airports in the Turks and Caicos Islands, sorted by location. The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory located southeast of Mayaguana in the Bahamas and north of the island of Hispaniola. It consists of two groups of sub-tropical islands in the West Indies, the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks Islands. The total population is about 36,000, of whom approximately 22,500 live on Providenciales in the Caicos Islands. Cockburn Town, the capital, is on Grand Turk Island. JAGS McCartney International Airport , also known as Grand Turk International Airport, is an airport located south of Cockburn Town on Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. It is the second largest airport in the Turks & Caicos, after Providenciales International Airport. History The airport is named for James Alexander George Smith McCartney, the Territory's first Chief Minister, who died in a plane crash in New Jersey, United States in 1980. Bahamas Airways was serving the airport by the late 1950s with weekly flights to Nassau via an intermediate stop at Inagua operated with small de Havilland Heron prop aircraft. West Caicos is an island in the Turks and Caicos Islands southwest of Providenciales. West Caicos has an area of , and has been uninhabited for over a century. Geography The island is home to the Lake Catherine, a protected wildlife reserve, filled with pink roseate flamingoes, turtles and other indigenous wildlife. Lake Catherine is connected to the sea through underground passages. Tides in the sea create upsurge in Lake Catherine, which is visible as "boiling" above the cave mouths on lake bed. The largest such cave mouth is Boiling Hole. The ocean off the west coast quickly drops off to over . South Caicos
South Caicos is the seventh-largest island in the Turks and Caicos archipelago, with a land area of . South Caicos is known for excellent fishing, both deep-sea and bone fishing, and scuba diving. South Caicos was formerly a salt exporter, the island still hosts a network of salt pans as a reminder of the industry. Today, the island's main income is derived from small-scale commercial fishing. The School for Field Studies, a global nonprofit, accredited by the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, has established a well-regarded Center for Marine Resource Studies in Cockburn Harbour. The Centre's research focuses on marine ecology and natural resource management.
