This is a list of airports in the Maldives, grouped by type and sorted by location. The ''Maldives'' or ''Maldive Islands'', officially the ''Republic of Maldives'', is an island country in the Indian Ocean formed by a double chain of 26 atolls stretching in a north–south direction off India's Lakshadweep islands, between Minicoy Island and Chagos Archipelago. It stands in the Laccadive Sea, about southwest of Sri Lanka. The atolls of Maldives encompass a territory spread over roughly , making it one of the most disparate countries in the world. It features 1,192 islets, of which two hundred are inhabited. The Republic of Maldives's capital and largest city is Malé. The geographic coordinate system (GCS) is a spherical or ellipsoidal coordinate system for measuring and communicating positions directly on the Earth as latitude and longitude. It is the simplest, oldest and most widely used of the various spatial reference systems that are in use, and forms the basis for most others. Alif Dhaal Atoll
Alifu Dhaalu Atoll (also known as Southern Ari Atoll or Ari Atholhu Dhekunuburi) is an administrative division of the Maldives. The separation of Ari Atoll (formerly Alifu Atoll) on March 1, 1984, into a Northern and a Southern section formed the two most recent administrative divisions of the Maldives, namely Alifu Alifu Atoll and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. Alifu Dhaalu Atoll lies south of the line between the channels of Himendhoo Dhekunukandu and Genburugau Kandu. There is an ancient mosque in Fenfushi island having wooden decorated ceilings and lacquerwork panels. Buddhist remains, including a stupa, have been found in Ariadhoo Island. Whale sharks are year-round residents of Alif Dhaal Atoll. Maamigili (Alif Dhaal Atoll)
Maamigili (Dhivehi: މާމިގިލި) Maamigili is the largest and most populous of the islands of Alif Dhaal Atoll which border the South Ari Marine Protected Area (MPA). Geography The island is southwest of the country's capital, Malé. Unlike all the other islands in this chain, it is naturally round in shape, owing to its position on one of the edge of one of the widest channels in the MPA. Demography Economy The main area of habitation is toward the eastern half of the island. A deep water access harbour leads toward the enormous main street, which runs east to west straight through the heart of the island. This busy street is full of different kinds of shops, with the tourist souvenir shops dominating the eastern end. Maafaru International Airport
Maafaru International Airport is an international airport located on Maafaru, one of the islands of the Noonu Atoll in Maldives. It was officially opened on 1 December 2019. Background The building of the airport is part of a scheme to develop Noonu Atoll as a luxury tourist zone. The plan to construct an airport was first announced by President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom in the 2000s, and the actual construction was initiated in 2017 by his brother Abdulla Yameen who succeeded him. The building of the airport was funded by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development of United Arab Emirates which provided a grant of US$60 million. It features a 2,200-meter runway that can handle commercial aircraft the size of Airbus A320s and the Boeing 737s. It was constructed by a Singaporean contractor, Tuff Infrastructure Pvt Ltd. Haa Dhaalu Atoll is the code name based on the letters of the Maldivian alphabet commonly used to refer to the administrative division (known as "Atoll") officially known as South Thiladhunmathi Atoll ( Maldivian: ''Thiladhunmathi Dhekunuburi'') in the Maldives. Hanimaadhoo (Dhivehi: ހަނިމާދޫ) is one of the inhabited islands of Haa Dhaalu Atoll administrative division and geographically part of Thiladhummathi Atoll in the north of the Maldives. Geography The island is north of the country's capital, Malé. Climate The Hanomaadhoo Meteorological Observatory is located on this island.
