Abilene, Kansas
Abilene (pronounced ) is a city in, and the county seat of, Dickinson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 6,460. It is home of The Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum and the Greyhound Hall of Fame. History 19th century In 1803, most of modern Kansas was secured by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. state. In 1857, Dickinson County was founded and Abilene began as a stage coach stop, established by Timothy Hersey and named Mud Creek. Johnson County Executive Airport is a public airport located four miles (6 km) southeast of the central business district (CBD) of Olathe, a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. Measured by number of aircraft operations, the facility was the fourth-busiest airport in the state of Kansas in 2018. The airport was on the FAA's list of airports whose control tower could be closed in September 2013, but it remains in operation. Olathe ( ) is the county seat of Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is the fourth-most populous city in both the Kansas City metropolitan area and the state of Kansas, with a 2020 population of 141,290. History 19th century Olathe was founded by John T. Barton in the spring of 1857. He rode to the center of Johnson County, and staked two quarter sections of land as the town site. Newton City-County Airport is three miles east of Newton, in Harvey County, Kansas. It is owned by the City of Newton and Harvey County. History This establishment was created during World War 2 as a flight training facility for the U.S. Navy. After WW2 ended, it was converted into an airport. It is mostly used as a transport facility now. Also, the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 categorized it as a ''reliever airport'' for Wichita Mid-Continent Airport.
