Wing (military Aviation Unit)
In military aviation, a wing is a unit of command. In most military aviation services, a wing is a relatively large formation of planes. In Commonwealth countries a wing usually comprises three squadrons, with several wings forming a group (around 10 squadrons). Each squadron will contain around 20 planes. Commonwealth usage Origins On its establishment in 1912, the British Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was intended to be an inter-service, combined force of the British Army and Royal Navy. Given the rivalry that existed between the army and navy, new terminology was used, in order to avoid marking the corps out as having an army or navy ethos. While the term "wing" had been used in the cavalry, its more general use predominated. Accordingly, the word "wing", with its allusion of flight, was chosen as the term of subdivision and the corps was split into a "Military Wing" (i.e. an army wing) and a "Naval Wing". The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) is one of the :Fighting Arms of the Royal Navy, five fighting arms of the Royal Navy and is responsible for the delivery of naval air power both from land and at sea. The Fleet Air Arm operates the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, F-35 Lightning II for maritime strike, the AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat, AW159 Wildcat and AgustaWestland AW101, AW101 Merlin for commando and anti-submarine warfare and the BAE Hawk as an aggressor. Tonbridge ( ) is a market town in Kent, England, on the River Medway, north of Royal Tunbridge Wells, south west of Maidstone and south east of London. In the administrative borough of Tonbridge and Malling, it had an estimated population of 41,293 in 2018. She was built for the Royal Navy and was launched as HMS ''Terrible'' (93) in 1944, but was not completed before the end of World War II.
