Western Bulldogs
The Western Bulldogs are a professional Australian rules football team that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's premier competition. Founded in 1877 as the Footscray Football Club, and based in West Footscray in the old City of Footscray west of Melbourne, the club won nine premierships in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) before gaining admission to the Victorian Football League (which became the AFL in 1990) in 1925. The club has won two VFL/AFL premierships, in 1954 and 2016 and was runner-up in 1961 and 2021. Much of the club's supporter base comes from Melbourne's traditionally working-class western region. Docklands Stadium, in the city's inner-west, has served as the club's home ground since 2000, while its headquarters and training facilities are at its original home ground, the Whitten Oval. Charlie Sutton
Charlie Sutton (3 April 1924 – 5 June 2012) was an Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Although he served the club for many years as coach and committee man, he is perhaps best known for captaining the Bulldogs to their first VFL premiership in 1954. Recruited from Spotswood, Sutton was a tough, nuggety footballer who embodied the club's fighting spirit. He played as a rover and half forward, but it was as a back pocket player that he made his name. In 1950, he finished equal third in the Brownlow Medal count and won the Con Weickhardt Trophy (as it was then known) as the Bulldogs' best and fairest player that season. He was captain-coach of the team from 1951 to 1955. After his retirement as a player, Sutton coached Footscray from 1956 until 9 July 1957, when he was unceremoniously dismissed and replaced by Ted Whitten. Shane Loveless
Shane Loveless (born 15 November 1958) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Loveless is best known as a prolific full-forward in country football, mostly for Victoria clubs, starting at Latrobe Valley Football League club Sale. He would continue playing across the state until the age of 46, by which time he had amassed over 2000 goals, from no less than 16 clubs. After arriving at Footscray from Sale, Loveless put together just two games in the 1979 VFL season but became their regular full-forward in 1980. He had his best run of form mid-season, with eight goals in a win over Fitzroy and another seven against South Melbourne the following week. Another eight goal haul came soon after, against Hawthorn at Western Oval, and he finished the year with 44 goals. Jim Edmond
Jim Edmond (born 3 September 1958 in Glasgow, Scotland) is a former Australian rules footballer. Originally from Bairnsdale Football Club, Edmond made his senior debut for Footscray Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 1977. Winning the club goalkicking award in 1981 with 25 goals, Edmond was Footscray captain from 1983 to 1985. After playing in three finals matches for Footscray in 1985, Edmond left the club over a contractual dispute. Edmond transferred to the Sydney Swans for the 1986 VFL season, before moving to Brisbane Bears for their inaugural season in 1987. Edmond spent two seasons at Brisbane, playing 17 games before his retirement at the end of the 1988 VFL season. Kelvin Templeton
Kelvin Templeton (born 30 September 1956) is a former Australian rules footballer. At sixteen years of age Templeton kicked 100 goals for Traralgon in the 1973 Latrobe Valley Football League season. Footscray, within whose country zone Traralgon was located, eyed Templeton continuously from that point, and he joined the club for the 1974 season at a time when the club had been desperately short of matchwinning goalkickers ever since Jack Collins retired in the 1950s. His debut against Collingwood was a sensation, for Templeton kicked six goals at full-forward. However, it was felt Templeton was too skinny at around , and it was only when he did major weight training that he really began to excel. In 1976 Templeton kicked 82 goals, with a best of seven against South Melbourne. Laurie Sandilands
Laurie Sandilands (born 30 April 1949) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Footscray in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It ... (VFL). He made his senior debut in 1966, after being recruited from a local Footscray District Football League club, the West Footscray Roosters. He played briefly in Footscray's Under 19's squad, before making his senior debut. Sandilands was a key position forward and topped Footscray's goalkicking every season from 1972 to 1975. His best season tally was 50 goals which he kicked in 1974. Sandilands also captained the club that season and he remained in charge for a further two seasons. Bernie Quinlan
Bernard Francis Quinlan (born 21 July 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Footscray Football Club and Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). One of a handful of players to have won a Brownlow Medal and Coleman Medal, Quinlan was an inaugural inductee in the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996. Renowned for his prodigious long kicking, which earned him the nickname "Superboot", Quinlan played his best football late in his career, earning most of his individual accolades after he had turned 30. He holds the record for the most career games without playing in a Grand Final and is one of only two VFL/AFL players (the other being Shaun Burgoyne) to have played 150 or more games at two separate clubs. Kevin Jackman (born 30 June 1945) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Recruited locally from Seddon, Jackman was a left-footed rover. Merv Hobbs
Mervyn 'Merv' Hobbs (born 16 June 1942) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the VFL during the early 1960s. VFL career Hobbs was recruited from Daylesford and joined Footscray as a rover. Hobbs is best remembered for a spectacular mark which he took in the 1961 Preliminary Final where Footscray upset Melbourne to end their streak of seven successive Grand Final appearances. His team lost the 1961 Grand Final comfortably to Hawthorn but he played in back to back Night Series Premierships in 1963 and 1964. Hobbs often rested in the forward pocket and was handy near goals. In an era where Footscray lacked big goal-kickers, Hobbs contributed one and a half goals a game. He kicked a career best eight goals in a game against South Melbourne at Western Oval early into his second season. George Bisset (footballer)
George Bisset (born 10 March 1943) is a former Australian rules footballer. Footscray He played as a rover and spent most of his career at Footscray. 1969 Brownlow Medal In 1969, Bisset came second to Fitzroy's Kevin Murray by one vote. Bisset had been reported for striking Carlton's Ian Robertson during the 12 July 1969 match against Carlton; and, although evidence was given that Bisset had punched Robertson (who had also been reported for striking Bisset) at least six times, the charge against Bisset was not sustained. As a result of being reported, Bisset was not eligible to receive Brownlow votes (for the best player amongst the fairest) for that match; and, given that he had more than 30 "disposals" and had kicked 6 goals, it was very likely that he would have received, at least, one vote. Ted Whitten
Edward James Whitten Sr. OAM (27 July 1933 – 17 August 1995) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Footscray Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Born and raised into a working-class family in Footscray, Whitten debuted for the Bulldogs in 1951, quickly becoming one of the league's best key position players, either at centre half-forward or centre half-back. In 1954 he won his first of five club best and fairest awards and earned a spot in the All-Australian team, the same year that Footscray won its first VFL/AFL premiership. Appointed as captain-coach in 1957, he developed a successful but controversial game plan centred around the since-outlawed flick pass, and in 1961 led the club to its second grand final appearance, losing to Hawthorn. Ray Baxter
Ray Baxter (born 24 February 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL) Recruited locally, from Kingsville, Baxter was a follower and key position player. He topped Footscray's goal-kicking in the 1959 VFL season, with 35 goals, six of which came in a loss to Essendon at Windy Hill. His efforts were rewarded with selection in that year's Victorian team which played Tasmania. He was the club's leading goal-kicker again in 1960, managing 37 goals, the seventh-biggest tally in the league that season. Playing as a centre half-back, Baxter was a member of the Footscray team which won the 1963 Night Premiership. Ray continued in footy, by being both Captain and Coach of Mordialloc from 1965 to 1967.
