Wales ( cy, Cymru ) is a Countries of the United Kingdom, country that is part of the United Kingdom. It is bordered by England to the Wales–England border, east, the Irish Sea to the north and west, the Celtic Sea to the south west and the Bristol Channel to the south. ' ( Welsh for ''The World on Four'') is a Welsh-language current affairs television programme, which has broadcast on S4C since the channel was launched in November 1982. It is produced by ITV Cymru Wales. The programme's reporters have brought stories from the four corners of the world to Welsh screens. In the 1980s, long-serving reporter Tweli Griffiths secured the first interview with Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddaffi. Reports also covered the fall of the Berlin wall, the Chernobyl disaster and the Persian Gulf war. The programme is also famed for securing high-profile exclusive interviews in Wales, such as with Sion Aubrey Roberts, the only person to be jailed over the Meibion Glyndwr arson campaign and Ryan James, a vet from Ammanford who had been wrongly jailed after being accused of murdering his wife. ''SuperTed'' is a Welsh superhero animated television series about an anthropomorphic teddy bear with superpowers, created by writer and animator Mike Young. Originally created by Young as a series of stories to help his son overcome his fear of the dark, SuperTed became a popular series of books and led to an animated series produced from 1982 to 1986. An American-produced series, '' The Further Adventures of SuperTed'', was produced by Hanna Barbera in 1989. The series also aired on The Disney Channel in the United States where it became the first British animated series to air on that channel. Creation The character was created by Mike Young in 1978 for his son to help him overcome his fear of darkness. Fireman Sam
''Fireman Sam'' (Welsh: ') is a Welsh animated children's television series about a fireman named Sam, his fellow firefighters, and other residents in the fictional Welsh rural village of Pontypandy (a portmanteau of two real towns, Pontypridd and Tonypandy). The original idea for the show came from two ex-firemen from London, England, who took their idea to artist and writer Rob Lee who developed the concept, and the show was commissioned. ''Fireman Sam'' first appeared on S4C on 1 November 1987, and a few weeks later on BBC1 on 17 November. The original series finished in 1994, and a new series that expanded the character cast commenced in 2003. The series was also shown as ' in Scottish Gaelic in Scotland. ''Ryan and Ronnie'' was a television comedy series, starring Ryan Davies and Ronnie Williams, made by BBC Wales and originally broadcast in the Welsh language under the title ''Ryan a Ronnie''. Origins and format The programme began with three Welsh-language series before the English version appeared in 1971. This then ran for three series, ending in 1973. The programme consisted of sketches and stand-up comedy sessions in which Ronnie took the role of "straight man" to Ryan's clowning. There was also music, from the duo themselves and regular guests such as Welsh singer Margaret Williams. Each programme ended with an episode of a spoof soap opera entitled "Our House", in which Ryan played the mother of the family and Ronnie the father. A Mind To Kill
''A Mind to Kill'' is a Welsh television police detective series, that developed from a feature-length pilot episode first broadcast in 1991. The series stars Philip Madoc as protagonist DCI Noel Bain. Four series were broadcast between 1994 and 2002, though the Christmas special is sometimes counted as a separate series, bringing the total to five. The show first aired as ''Yr Heliwr'' on S4C, before being broadcast on Channel 5 in the UK. The series was filmed in both English and in Welsh, with each scene being shot first in one language and then in the other. The series has since been dubbed into more than a dozen languages and shown all over the world. The series is set in South Wales, and features a variety of post-industrial, rural, urban and seaside landscapes. The pilot episode was filmed in the Aberystwyth area. ''Bang'' is a bilingual crime drama English/Welsh television series, created by Roger Williams, that was first broadcast on S4C on 10 September 2017. The show, set in Port Talbot, Wales, stars Jacob Ifan as Sam Jenkins, a loner who becomes entangled in a web of lies after coming into possession of a gun, and Catrin Stewart as his sister Gina, who is a police detective. The second series was broadcast on S4C in February–March 2020. Initial broadcasts carried entirely English subtitles (although these need to be accessed by the viewer, and do not appear on screen), while repeat airings carried encoded English subtitles for scenes spoken in Welsh. The series was concurrently available on the BBC iPlayer as part of the BBC's ongoing relationship with S4C. ''Hidden'' ( cy, Craith) is a Welsh television drama serial, created by Mark Andrew and Ed Talfan. It was initially broadcast in Welsh on the Welsh-language channel S4C under its Welsh name ''Craith''. The bilingual version of the series, under the English name ''Hidden'', was broadcast on BBC One Wales and BBC Four. The Welsh-language versions of the first two series aired on S4C in 2018 and 2019, respectively, with the third and final series beginning on 10 October 2021. The English-language version of the third and final series aired in April 2022. Overview Leading actress Sian Reese-Williams commented that the series was more of a "personal drama" than a crime series, because of the multiple human stories involved, including those of the victims, the families of the victims, and the criminal protagonist. The Light In The Hall
''The Light in the Hall'' () is a bilingual Welsh and English-language drama television series. It premiered on S4C on 15 May 2022. Production The series was co-produced by S4C, Channel 4, and the producers ''Duchess Street Productions'' and ''Triongl'' in association with ''APC Studios''. The show is based in Carmarthenshire, Wales where two of the leading actors, Alexandra Roach and Iwan Rheon are from. Significant parts of the series were also filmed in the Tywi Valley, in the towns of Llandovery, Llangadog, Llandeilo and Carmarthen. Some filming also took place in Cardiff. Plot The Welsh series has six episodes and is based in Llanemlyn, a town in west Wales. Rough Cut (TV Series)
Rough Cut (Welsh: ''Dal y Mellt:'' translates as "Catch the Lightning") is a Welsh language contemporary thriller series. About ''Dal y Mellt'' is a six-part series made by Vox Pictures and originally shown on S4C. The series is based on the contemporary thriller novel written by Iwan ‘Iwcs’ Roberts, from Trawsfynydd and is set in Meirionydd, Cardiff and Soho in London. The novelist Iwan Roberts also wrote the script and co-produced the drama alongside Llŷr Morus and Huw Chiswell. The series director, Huw Chiswell says that filming was a challenge where 6 six hours had to be finished in 50 days. A second series of the show would return to S4C in 2024. Netflix Abacus Media Rights sold the crime drama to Netflix which is set to be the first ever Welsh language-only drama licensed on Netflix, streaming in the UK from April 2023. ''Keeping Faith'' ( cy, Un Bore Mercher, "One Wednesday Morning") is a British thriller television series, filmed and set in Wales, and first broadcast in Welsh on S4C from 5 November 2017. Created by Matthew Hall and produced by Vox Pictures. The series stars Eve Myles as Faith Howells, a solicitor at a family-run law firm whose husband, Evan, disappears whilst she is on maternity leave following the birth of their third child.
