The Washburn Ichabods football program is a college football team that represents Washburn University in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a part of NCAA Division II. The team has had 38 head coaches since its first recorded football game in 1891. The current coach is Craig Schurig who first took the position for the 2002 season. Bennie Owen
Benjamin Gilbert Owen (July 24, 1875 – February 26, 1970) was an American football player and coach of football, basketball, and baseball. He served as the head football coach at Washburn College, now Washburn University, in 1900, at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas from 1902 to 1904, and at the University of Oklahoma from 1905 to 1926, compiling a career college football record of 155–60–19. Owen was also the head basketball coach at Oklahoma from 1908 to 1921, tallying a mark of 113–49, and the head baseball coach at the school from 1906 to 1922, amassing a record of 142–102–4. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1951. Ernest Bearg
Ernest Elmer Bearg (July 20, 1893 – August 24, 1971) was an American football and basketball coach. He served as the head football coach at Washburn University from 1918 to 1919 and again from 1929 to 1935 and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln from 1925 to 1928, compiling a career college football record of 71–40–7. Bearg also spent one year as Nebraska's men's basketball coach (1925–1926) and posted an 8–10 mark. Ellis Dwight Rainsberger Sr. (October 20, 1932 – July 17, 2021) was an American football and Canadian football player, coach, and scout. He served as the head football coach at Washburn University (1962–1964), Southern Illinois University Carbondale (1966), and Kansas State University (1975–1977), compiling a career college football record of 27–42–1. Joseph Ralph Brown (April 27, 1926 – December 13, 2016) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas from 1959 to 1961, compiling a record of 9–18. Playing career Brown played as a fullback in 1946 at Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College—now known as Oklahoma State University–Stillwater. The next year, he transferred to the University of Kansas to play center. He did not play his last two years of college because of a back injury. Richard Milan Godlove (January 24, 1905 – September 15, 1985) was an American football and basketball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas from 1936 to 1942 and Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas from 1946 to 1968, compiling a career college football coaching record of 104–55–10. Charles DeLoss "Dee" Errickson (December 21, 1897 – September 22, 1985) was an American football and basketball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Ottawa University from 1931 to 1935 and at Washburn University in 1944, retiring with a career college football coaching record of 19–27–1.
