Fleetway Publications
Fleetway Publications was a magazine publishing company based in London. It was founded in 1959 when the Mirror Group acquired the Amalgamated Press, then based at Fleetway House, Farringdon Street, London. It was one of the companies that merged into the IPC group in 1963, and the Fleetway banner continued to be used until 1968 when all IPC's publications were reorganised into the unitary IPC Magazines. In 1987 IPC's comics line was sold to Robert Maxwell as Fleetway Publications. Egmont UK bought Fleetway from Maxwell in 1991, merging it with their own comics publishing operation, London Editions, to form Fleetway Editions, but the name "Fleetway" ceased to appear on their comics some time after 2002. In August 2016, Rebellion Developments acquired the Fleetway library from Egmont, making it the owner of all comics characters and titles created by IPC's subsidiaries after January 1, 1970, together with 26 specified characters which appeared in '' Buster'' and ''Roy of the ... Gestapo
The (), abbreviated Gestapo (; ), was the official secret police of Nazi Germany and in German-occupied Europe. The force was created by Hermann Göring in 1933 by combining the various political police agencies of Prussia into one organisation. On 20 April 1934, oversight of the Gestapo passed to the head of the ''Schutzstaffel'' (SS), Heinrich Himmler, who was also appointed Chief of German Police by Hitler in 1936. Instead of being exclusively a Prussian state agency, the Gestapo became a national one as a sub-office of the (SiPo; Security Police). From 27 September 1939, it was administered by the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA). It became known as (Dept) 4 of the RSHA and was considered a sister organisation to the (SD; Security Service). John Stokes (comics)
John Stokes is a British comics artist who has largely worked for IPC and Marvel UK and is best known for his work on '' Fishboy''. Biography Stokes got into the comics industry thanks to his brother, George Stokes, who already worked for IPC. He lived in India until the age of 8 or 9, and when he came to England the first comic work he saw was that of his brother and colleagues, as well the comic ''Eagle'', which launched around the same time. This sparked a lifelong interest in comics and he moved from drawing comics in his spare time at school and trying not to draw comics at art school (where his interest was discouraged), to doing it professionally, starting in the early 1960s. He worked, largely uncredited (as was the practice at the time), for IPC for 16 years where, among other things, he drew all 360 installments of '' Fishboy'' as well as a number of other '' Buster'' strips. Royal Marines
The Corps of Royal Marines (RM), also known as the Royal Marines Commandos, are the UK's special operations capable commando force, amphibious light infantry and also one of the five fighting arms of the Royal Navy. U-Boat
U-boats were naval submarines operated by Germany, particularly in the First and Second World Wars. Although at times they were efficient fleet weapons against enemy naval warships, they were most effectively used in an economic warfare role (commerce raiding) and enforcing a naval blockade against enemy shipping. The primary targets of the U-boat campaigns in both wars were the merchant convoys bringing supplies from Canada and other parts of the British Empire, and from the United States, to the United Kingdom and (during the Second World War) to the Soviet Union and the Allied territories in the Mediterranean. German submarines also destroyed Brazilian merchant ships during World War II, causing Brazil to declare war on both Germany and Italy on 22 August 1942. Alberto Giolitti
Alberto Giolitti (November 14, 1923 – April 15, 1993) was an Italian-American comic book artist. He was born in Rome, where his family held (and still hold) one of the most famous cafés, Giolitti, where he also worked for a while. He debuted as artist for ''Il Vittorioso'' in the late 1940s. After World War II, Giolitti moved to South America, where he worked for Editorial Lainez and Columba of Buenos Aires. After three years in there he was able to move to his original destination, the United States; there he became a mainstay of Western/Dell Publishing, penciling numerous characters, including Indian Chief, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon, Abraham Lincoln Life Story, Tonto, Cisco Kid, Turok, and Gunsmoke. After obtaining American citizenship, in 1960 he returned to Italy, from where he continued to collaborate with Western and other US and British publishers. Tom Kerr
Tom Kerr was a British comic strip artist whose work has appeared in comics such as ''Look-in'', the ''Eagle'', '' Valiant'', and '' TV21''. He has also drawn for many annuals of the 1960s and 1970s, including the ''Monkees'' annuals, ''Look-in'' annuals, etc. He is not to be conflated with the Australian cartoonist of the same name, who was responsible for such creations as Daddles, an animated duck that would walk along the TV screen when a cricketer scored a duck. Career There is little known about Tom Kerr's life. Angus Allan
Angus Peter Allan (22 July 1936 – 16 July 2007) was a British comic strip writer and magazine editor who worked on ''TV Century 21'' in the 1960s and ''Look-in'' magazine during the 1970s. Most commonly known as Angus Allan and sometimes credited as Angus P. Allan, he was responsible for original comic strip adaptations of numerous popular TV series. Allan's output was prolific, and virtually all the Look-In comic strips were his creations. Some of his comic works included ''The Six Million Dollar Man'', '' Logan's Run'' and '' Charlie's Angels''. Allan collaborated with many well-known British comic strip artists, including Jim Baikie and Arthur Ranson. Scott Goodall
Scott Goodall MBE (7 November 1935 – 7 March 2016) was a British comics writer. Career Goodall started out his comics career in the early-to-mid 1960s. He was part of a rotating cast of writers for the spooky strip ''The Strangest Stories Ever Told'', published in ''School Friend''. Goodall wrote ''Captain Hurricane'' scripts for '' Valiant'' comic from 1963 to 1976. In 1965, he was heavily involved in the launch of ''TV Century 21'' (''TV21'') with Alan Fennell and Angus Allan. Goodall wrote the '' Thunderbirds'' scripts for two years in ''TV21'', drawn by Frank Bellamy; and also most of the scripts for ''Zero X'', drawn by Mike Noble. Goodall created and wrote the character '' Fishboy'' in 1968 (illustrated by John Stokes), and lesser-known characters such as ''Splash Gorton'' (illustrated by Joe Colquhoun). Buster (comics)
''Buster'' was a British comic which began publication in 1960, originally published by IPC Magazines Ltd under the company's comics division Fleetway, then by Egmont UK Ltd under the same imprint until its closure in 2000. Despite missing issues due to industrial action during its run, the comic published 1,902 issues in total. The comic carried a mixture of humour and adventure strips, featuring the title character Buster and a host of other characters. Description The title character, whose strip usually appeared on the front cover, was Buster himself. He was originally billed as ''Buster: Son of Andy Capp''; Andy Capp is the lead character of the eponymous ''Daily Mirror'' newspaper strip, and Buster wore a similar flat cap to reinforce the connection. A non-commissioned officer (NCO) is a military officer who has not pursued a commission. Non-commissioned officers usually earn their position of authority by promotion through the enlisted ranks. (Non-officers, which includes most or all enlisted personnel, are of lower rank than any officer.) Leo Baxendale
Joseph Leo Baxendale (27 October 1930 – 23 April 2017) was an English cartoonist and publisher. Baxendale wrote and drew several titles. Among his best-known creations are the ''The Beano, Beano'' comic strip, strips ''Little Plum'', ''Minnie the Minx'', ''The Bash Street Kids'', and ''The Three Bears (comic strip), The Three Bears''. Career Baxendale was born in Whittle-le-Woods, Lancashire, and was educated at Preston Catholic College. After serving in the Royal Air Force, RAF, he took his first job as an artist for the local ''Lancashire Evening Post'' drawing adverts and cartoons.
