Juan Mari Brás
Juan Mari Brás (December 2, 1927 – September 10, 2010) was an advocate for Puerto Rican independence from the United States who founded the Puerto Rican Socialist Party (PSP). On October 25, 2006, he became the first person to receive a Puerto Rican citizenship certificate from the Puerto Rico State Department. His son, Santiago Mari Pesquera, was assassinated by a suspected far-right activist in 1976. In 2009, documents revealed the FBI had known of a plot to assassinate Mari Brás but did not share the information with him. Early years Juan Mari Brás was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico on December 2, 1927. His father, Santiago Mari Ramos, was an active participant in the independence movement who often took his son to political meetings and rallies. The Puerto Rican Independence Party ( es, Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño, PIP) is a social-democratic political party in Puerto Rico that campaigns for the independence of Puerto Rico from the United States. Those who follow the PIP ideology are usually called ''independentistas'', ''pipiolos'', or sometimes just ''pro-independence activists''. History The party began as the electoral wing of the Puerto Rican independence movement. It is the largest of the independence parties, and the only one that is on the ballot during elections (other candidates must be added in by hand). In 1948, two years after being founded, the PIP gathered 10.2% of the votes in the island. Fernando Picó
Fernando Picó Bauermeister, S.J. (August 15, 1941 – June 27, 2017) was a Puerto Rican Jesuit, historian and academic. Picó was a leading expert on the history of Puerto Rico and was considered an authority on the island's 20th century history. One of his best known works, ''Historia General de Puerto Rico'', is widely utilized in Puerto Rican history curricula. He was a professor of history at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, from 1972 until his death in 2017. Biography Picó was born in the district of Santurce, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on August 15, 1941, to Florencio Picó and Matilde Bauermeister Picó. Luce López-Baralt (born 1944, San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a prominent Puerto Rican scholar and essayist and a professor of Spanish and Comparative Literature at the University of Puerto Rico. Academic career Many of her books and articles present for discussion the mystical literature and religious practices of Spain, renaissance and medieval (including al-Andalus), i.e., both Christian and Muslim. She acknowledges the influence of the early 20th century Spanish Arabist, the Rev. Miguel Asín Palacios, among others. In particular, she has followed traces of the trail that show a fruitful interaction between Muslims and Christians in Iberia, e.g., as it affected San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa de Ávila. Luis López Álvarez (born May 7, 1930) is a Spanish poet and former professor. Biography As a teenager, Luis López Alvarez had Narciso Alonso Cortés (1875–1972) as a teacher. He particularly belongs to the poets of the generation of the 50s. With his third book of poems, ''Las Querencias'' (1969) he presented a total of thirty-seven impeccable classical sonnets which he completed years later in the collection of 113 sonnets that make ''Querencias y quereres'' (2001). Aníbal Salvador Acevedo Vilá (born 13 February 1962) is a Puerto Rican politician and lawyer. He served as the governor of Puerto Rico from 2005 to 2009. He is a Harvard University alumnus (LL.M. 1987) and a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico School of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctor degree. Luisa Rosario Seijo Maldonado (born 4 August 1950) is a Puerto Rican academic, activist, and social worker. Early life and education Luisa Rosario Seijo Maldonado was born to José Alejandro Seijo and Haydeé Maldonado Vega on 4 August 1959 in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. They were both heavily involved in the founding of the Vega Coop credit union. Her father was a founding partner, along with some other relatives, and her mother became part of its first educational committee. Seijo's first encounter with community work was through a Catholic Action group when she was fifteen. With her parents she visited the community of Rapaurra in Candelaria, Vega Alta.
