Each entry indicates the name of the building along with an image, if available, its location and the jurisdiction it covers,For the usage of court abbreviations, see List of United States district and territorial courts. the dates during which it was used for each such jurisdiction, and, if applicable the person for whom it was named, and the date of renaming. Dates of use will not necessarily correspond with the dates of construction or demolition of a building, as pre-existing structures may be adapted or court use, and former court buildings may later be put to other uses. Also, the official name of the building may be changed at some point after its use as a federal court building has been initiated. Monroe, Louisiana
Monroe (historically french: Poste-du-Ouachita) is the eighth-largest city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, and parish seat of Ouachita Parish. With a 2020 census-tabulated population of 47,702, it is the principal city of the Monroe metropolitan statistical area, the second-largest metropolitan area in North Louisiana. Etymology As governor of Louisiana, Esteban Rodríguez Miró had ''Fort Miro'' built in 1791. Fort Miro changed its name to Monroe to commemorate the first arrival of the steamboat ''James Monroe'' in the spring of 1820. The ship's arrival was the single event, in the minds of local residents, that transformed the outpost into a town. Credit for the name is indirectly given to James Monroe of Virginia, the fifth President of the United States, for whom the ship was named. John Malach Shaw
John Malach Shaw (November 14, 1931 – December 24, 1999) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. Education and career Born in Beaumont, Texas, Shaw received a Bachelor of Science degree from Washington and Lee University in 1953 and a Juris Doctor from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University in 1956. He was in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, and then in the United States Army Reserve until 1964, achieving the rank of captain. He was in private practice in Opelousas, Louisiana from 1958 to 1979. Federal judicial service On June 5, 1979, Shaw was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to a new seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana created by 92 Stat. 1629.
