List Of United States Army Installations In Panama
This is a list of United States military installations in Panama, all of which fall within the former Canal zone. The U.S. military installations in Panama were turned over to local authorities by 1999. Transition phases In 1903, the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty was signed between Panama and the United States. It created the Panama Canal Zone as a U.S. governed region, and allowed the U.S. to build the Panama Canal. In 1977, the ''Panama Canal Treaty'' (also called ''Torrijos–Carter Treaties'') was signed by Commander of Panama's National Guard, General Omar Torrijos and U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Panama Canal Zone
The Panama Canal Zone ( es, Zona del Canal de Panamá), also simply known as the Canal Zone, was an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the Isthmus of Panama, that existed from 1903 to 1979. It was located within the territory of Panama, consisting of the Panama Canal and an area generally extending on each side of the centerline, but excluding Panama City and Colón. Its capital was Balboa. The Panama Canal Zone was created on November 18, 1903 from the territory of Panama; established with the signing of the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty, which allowed for the construction of the Panama Canal within the territory by the United States. Fort Davis, Panama
Fort William D. Davis is a former U.S. Army fort near Gatun, Panama. It was transferred to Panama in 1995. Current use Panama renamed the location ''Jose Dominador Bazan'' residential area. It is used for civilian housing, education and production facilities, including an established 400 seat international call center in operation since 2004. It is also the Panamanian National Police Training Academy grounds since 2014. Panamá Pacífico International Airport
Panamá Pacífico International Airport is a commercial airport in Panama. It is located on the site of the former Howard Air Force Base, a United States Air Force base that was within the Panama Canal Zone. Panama City can be reached by crossing the nearby Bridge of the Americas. Commercial airline service started in 2014, with Viva Air Colombia being the first to begin operations to Bogotá and Medellin. The airport receives regular Boeing 737 jet aircraft from Wingo. Facilities The airport is southwest of Balboa, the port at the Pacific (southeastern) end of the Panama Canal. Most of the area around it is uninhabited and forms part of the Canal Zone watershed. Howard Air Force Base
Howard Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force base located in Panama. It discontinued military operations on 1 November 1999 as a result of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, which specified that US military facilities in the former Panama Canal Zone be closed and the facilities be turned over to the Panamanian government. The airport is located six miles southwest of Balboa, at the southern (Pacific) end of the Panama Canal. Most of the area around it was uninhabited and formed part of the Panama Canal Zone watershed, although Panama City could be reached by crossing the nearby Bridge of the Americas. Fort Amador
Fort Amador ( es, Fuerte Amador) and Fort Grant were former United States Army bases built to protect the Pacific (southern) end of the Panama Canal at Panama Bay. Amador was the primary on-land site, lying below the Bridge of the Americas. Grant consisted of a series of islands lying just offshore, some connected to Amador via a causeway. Fort Sherman was the corresponding base on the Atlantic (northern) side. All of the forts were turned over to the Republic of Panama in 1999, and the area is now a major tourist attraction. PSA Panama International Terminal is a port built by PSA International on the site of the former United States Navy Rodman Naval Base located southwest of Panama City at the entrance to the Panama Canal from the Pacific Ocean. US Naval Station 1937-1999 Rodman Naval Station construction of the United States Navy station began in 1932 and completed in 1937 in the Panama Canal Zone. The station was named for Admiral Hugh Rodman who served as Marine Superintendent and Superintendent of Transportation of the Canal Zone in 1914. Albrook Air Force Station is a former United States Air Force facility in Panama. It was closed on 30 September 1997 as a result of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties which specified that United States military facilities in the former Panama Canal Zone be closed and the facilities be turned over to the Panamanian government. Panama's Ciudad del Saber (Spanish for ''City of Knowledge'') is a government-sponsored cluster of academic organizations, technology companies and non-governmental organizations, managed by the foundation of the same name. It is located just across the Miraflores locks, in what used to be United States Army South headquarters, Fort Clayton, now known simply as Clayton. History ''Ciudad del Saber'' was born from the idea of converting some military areas located in the former Panama Canal Zone into a center for knowledge exchange. The project was supported by former presidents Nicolás Ardito Barletta and Ernesto Pérez Balladares, and was presented by the latter at the Summit of the Americas held in Miami, Florida, in December 1994. Fort Clayton
Fort Clayton was a United States Army base in the former Panama Canal Zone, later part of the Republic of Panama. Base Fort Clayton was located northwest of Balboa, Panama, with the Panama Canal located nearby. It closed in 1999 pursuant to the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. The Southern Command Network and 193rd Infantry Brigade were both headquartered there, as was the headquarters of United States Army South prior to its relocation to Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. The 534th Military Police Battalion stationed here was partly responsible for law enforcement patrols on all Pacific side military installations.
