List Of United Kingdom Speedway League Riders' Champions
The List of United Kingdom Speedway League Riders' Champions is the list of individual riders who have won the United Kingdom's League Riders' Championship that corresponded to the relevant league at the time. The list is split into three divisions, the top tier, the second tier and third tier, all three divisions have been known in various guises such as National League, Premier League, Elite League and many more. This list gives a complete listing of the winners for each season. During some years there was only one or two divisions. British League Riders' Championship
The British League Riders Championship was an individual motorcycle speedway contest between the top riders (or two riders) with the highest average from each club competing in the British League in the UK, or the top division of the league during the period when it had two or more divisions. Similar tournaments had been held before the formation of the British League in 1965, including the Provincial League Riders' Championship, open to riders from the Provincial League. The championship has been sponsored by Player's No 10, Skol, Leyland Cars, Gauntlet, Daily Mirror, TNT Sameday and Dunlop. The championship continued until the British League Riders' Championship was replaced with the Premier League Riders Championship in 1995. Ole Olsen (speedway Rider)
Ole Olsen (born 16 November 1946) is a Danish former professional motorcycle speedway rider. He won the Speedway World Championship three times, in 1971, 1975, and 1978. He also won the World Long Track Championship in 1973. In 1979 Olsen won Speedway World Pairs Championship with Hans Nielsen. In 1978, 1981 and 1983 Olsen was the captain of Denmark's winning Speedway World Team Cup teams, while also finishing second in 1979 and 1982. Denmark could only place third in the 1980 World Team Cup Intercontinental Final and missed a place in the Final held at the Olympic Stadium in Wrocław, Poland, the same track where he made his World Individual Final debut in 1970. In 2015, Olsen was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycling achievements. Mike Ferreira
Michaal John Ferreira (1955–2014) was a motorcycle speedway rider from Zimbabwe. Speedway career Ferreira rode in the top two tiers of British Speedway from 1974 to 1985, riding for various clubs. During the 1981 National League season he topped the league averages and became the National League Riders' Champion, held at Wimbledon Stadium on 26 September. He also doubled up with Crusaders teammate and fellow Zimbabwean Denzil Kent to win the National League Pairs. Kenny Carter
Kenneth Malcolm Carter (28 March 1961 – 21 May 1986), was a British world class speedway rider. He rode for Newcastle Diamonds (1978), Halifax Dukes (1978–1985) and Bradford Dukes (1986). On Wednesday, 21 May 1986, he shot dead his wife, Pam, and then killed himself, orphaning their two young children in the process. Career Carter was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire. He was widely regarded as a future World Champion and become the World Pairs Champion with Peter Collins in 1983. Leslie 'Les' Collins (born 24 May 1958) is a former speedway rider. He finished runner-up in the 1982 Speedway World Championship as well as winning the Intercontinental Final in 1982, the British Under-21 Championship in 1977 and the British League Riders' Championship in 1980. Steve Koppe
Steve Koppe (born 16 April 1953) is a former speedway rider from Australia. Speedway career Koppe rode in the top two tiers of British Speedway from 1976 to 1980, riding for various clubs. In 1978, he became the National League Riders' Champion and was the Queensland Champion three years later in 1981. After Speedway Steve retired from the sport in 1989 and owned a motorcycle shop with a Suziki, Husaberg and KTM franchise. Married to Roslyn with 5 children (and a daughter from a previous marriage), they live in Townsville North Queensland Australia. Colin Eric Richardson (born 24 November 1958 in London) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Early Life and Career Richardson was born on 24th November, 1958 in Lambeth, London. He attended Wick Hill Secondary Modern School in Bracknell from 1970 to 1972 and then Garth Hill Comprehensive School, also in Bracknell, from 1973 to 1977. His speedway career started when riding for Eastbourne Eagles in 1975 and Wimbledon Dons in 1976. Richardson enjoyed a very successful 1977 National League season, 1977 winning the British League Division Two Riders Championship, National League Riders' Championship, held at Wimbledon Stadium on 24 September 1977. Joseph William Owen (born 13 September 1956) is a British former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Laurie Etheridge
Laurie Etheridge (born 12 September 1948 in Pulborough, England) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned one international cap for the England national speedway team. Career His first attempt at speedway, in 1963, was thwarted when his bike was stolen and he did not resume the sport until 1966. In 1967, he signed for Exeter Falcons and managed three appearances for them in that season. His career really started the following year, when he was signed up for Hackney Hawks by Len Silver and their partner team Rayleigh Rockets. A good season for Rayleigh resulted in a full-time contract for Hackney. He was a Crayford Kestrels regular for eight years from 1975, achieving nearly 300 league and cup appearances as a Kestrel.
