Telugu cinema, also known as Tollywood, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Telugu language, widely spoken in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Telugu cinema is based in Film Nagar, Hyderabad, India. The nickname ''Tollywood'' is a portmanteau of the words Telugu and Hollywood. By 2021, it has emerged as the largest film industry in India in terms of box-office. Since 1909, filmmaker Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu was involved in producing short films and travelling to different regions in Asia to promote film work. In 1921, he produced the silent film, '' Bhishma Pratigna'', generally considered to be the first Telugu feature film, and hence, regarded as the ''Father of Telugu cinema''. Devata (1941 Film)
''Devata'' is a 1941 Indian Telugu-language drama film directed by B. N. Reddy. The huge success of this film led to the making of more films with the same title in 1964 by B. Padmanabham and in 1982 by D. Ramanaidu. The film was remade in Malayalam as '' Pavappettaval'' (1967). Plot Venugopala Murthy returns to his native village from England after passing law school. His mother Mangamma and sister Seetha are very happy. Venu is attracted towards Lakshmi, daughter of Venkaiah, who works as servant in the family. He takes advantage of the sleeping Lakshmi and promises to marry her. He leaves to the city and stays with his uncle Balaramaiah. Venu marries his daughter Vimala. Tenali Ramakrishna (1941 Film)
Tenali Ramakrishna (born Garlapati Ramakrishna; also known as Tenali Rama) was an Indian poet, scholar, thinker and a special advisor in the court of the Vijayanagara Empire, Vijayanagar king Krishnadevaraya, who ruled from C.E. 1509 to 1529. He was a Telugu people, Telugu poet who hailed from a village called Tenali located at what is now the Andhra Pradesh region, generally known for the folk tales which focus on his wit. He was one of the Ashtadiggajas or the eight poets at the court of Krishnadevaraya. His father died when he was a child. To overcome the depression that Rama faced, his mother Lakṣamma took him to Vijayanagar where he became an advisor to Sri Krishnadevaraya and the 8th scholar in his court. He was a great scholar and poet of Telugu language. Tenali Ramakrishna was also a minister of the court. ''Tara Sasankam'' ( te, తారాశశాంకం) is a play written by Kopparapu Subba Rao. It has been performed about 1,500 times under his own direction. It was published in 1945 by Modern Publishers, Tenali. Subsequently, three editions were brought out. There was a lawsuit filed by the publishers on behalf of K. Satyanarayana of Ramakrishna pictures, the producers of the 1969 film. Kadaru Nagabhushanam
Kadaru Nagabhushanam or K. B. Nagabhushanam (1902 – 18 October 1976) was an Indian film director and producer in the 1940s to 1960s, working in Telugu and Tamil cinema. He was the husband of P. Kannamba. They established Rajarajeshwari Films and produced many mythological films starring Kannamba in the lead role including ''Harischandra''. Their social film ''Navajeevanam'' on untouchability got the recognition of Madras State and was chosen as the best feature film.
