First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. Bernard McCarthy
Bernard McCarthy (24 July 1874 – 7 July 1948) was a New Zealand cricketer, lawyer and papal knight. Life and work After attending St. Patrick's College, Wellington, McCarthy moved to Hāwera, where he qualified as a lawyer and in 1903 founded the law firm that is now known as Welsh McCarthy. McCarthy Street in Hāwera is named after him. He became president of the St. Patrick's College Old Boys' Association; for his work for the Old Boys and for organising the school's golden jubilee celebrations in 1935 he was awarded the papal knighthood of St Gregory the Great. Cricket career McCarthy played four matches for Taranaki during its brief period as a first-class cricket team. In Taranaki's only first-class victory, against Hawke's Bay in 1896–97, he took 3 for 42 and 4 for 46 with his off-spin. Joy Marshall
The Rev. Joy Marriott Marshall (23 January 1867 – 2 September 1903) was a New Zealand Anglican clergyman and school teacher who was also a prominent tennis player, rugby footballer and cricketer. Early life and clerical career Joy Marshall was born in Ixworth, Suffolk, England, in 1867, one of the sons of the Rev. John Hannath Marshall and his wife Emily (née Rogers). The family moved to New Zealand in 1876 for the Rev. Marshall's health, as he was suffering from tuberculosis, and settled in Kaiteriteri, near Nelson. He died there in 1879. After some time at schools in England, Joy Marshall completed his schooling at Wanganui Collegiate School from 1883 to 1885, then attended Canterbury University College, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics and Classics in 1890. George Heenan
George Charles Heenan (13 September 1855 – 24 October 1912) was a New Zealand cricketer, schoolteacher and geologist. Personal life Heenan was born in India, grew up in County Westmeath in Ireland, and was educated in England at Cheltenham College and King's College London. He moved to New Zealand in 1880, and held positions as a schoolteacher in Wellington and in the Taranaki region, where he was headmaster at Waipuku and Ōpunake. He resigned from his position in Ōpunake in early 1903. He was living with his wife Maude in Waipuku in 1894. In 1910 or 1911 he travelled to Burma with Annie Stanley and her son Patrick, who may also have been George's son. He died in Burma in 1912. A legal notice in 1914 described his profession as "geologist and art polisher". Annie and Patrick stayed in Burma until 1922 or 1923, when they moved to England.
