Tamil Cinema
Tamil cinema, also known as Kollywood is a part of Indian Cinema; primarily engaged in production of motion pictures in the Tamil language. Based out of the Kodambakkam neighbourhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it is popularly called ''Kollywood'' - a portmanteau of the words Kodambakkam and Hollywood. The first Tamil silent film, ''Keechaka Vadham'', was directed by R. Nataraja Mudaliar in 1918. The first Tamil talking feature film, ''Kalidas'', a multilingual directed by H M Reddy was released on 31 October 1931, less than seven months after India's first talking motion picture ''Alam Ara''. ''Krishna Vijayam'' () is a 1950 Indian Tamil language film written and directed by Sundar Rao Nadkarni. The film featured Carnatic music singer N. C. Vasanthakokilam in the role of Narada. The film, based on the Epic story of Krishna avatar, featured later day playback singer A. L. Raghavan as the child Krishna. Adult Krishna was played by P. V. Narasimha Bharathi. Manthiri Kumari
''Manthiri Kumari'' () is a 1950 Indian Tamil-language historical fiction film directed by Ellis R. Dungan and starring M. G. Ramachandran, M. N. Nambiar. Plot The King of Mullai Nadu is dominated by his Raja guru (head priest) ( M. N. Nambiar). The guru wants his son Parthiban (S. A. Natarajan) to be appointed as the General of the army. But the King appoints Veera Mohan (MGR) instead. The enraged Parthiban becomes a bandit and starts raiding the countryside. Parthiban lives in the kingdom during the daytime and loots merchants and passengers who pass by in groups, in the road during nighttime or at times when no people from Mullai Nadu frequent the roads. Santha Kumari
Santha Kumari (born Vellaala Subbamma; 17 May 1920 – 16 January 2006) was an Indian musical artist and actress. She was married to the Telugu film director and producer P. Pullayya. Early years Vellaala Subbamma was born in Proddatur town, (Kadapa District, Andhra Pradesh) to Sreenivasa Rao and Pedda Narasamma. Her father was an actor and her mother was a classical music singer. Santhakumari learned classical music and violin under the guidance of Professor P. Sambamurthy and was a classmate of D. K. Pattammal. She joined a drama troupe and was an AIR artiste by the age of sixteen. She came to Madras (now Chennai) to pursue a career in music. ''Macha Rekai'' is a 1950 Indian Tamil language, Tamil-language film directed by P. Pullaiah and produced by T. R. Mahalingam (actor), T. R. Mahalingam. It is based on Thanjai N. Surabhi Kamalabai
Surabhi Kamalabai (1913–1977) was an Indian actress who worked in Telugu theatre and Telugu cinema. She has the distinction of being the first Telugu actress in a talkie film with '' Bhakta Prahlada'' (1932), directed by H. M. Reddy. She played the role of Leelavathi, the wife of Hiranyakasipa. Since then she acted in about 30 films, including '' Savitri'' (1933), ''Pathala Bhairavi'' (1951), '' Malliswari'' (1951), ''Illarikam'' (1959) and ''Velugu Needalu'' (1961). She belongs to the well esteemed Surabhi drama company, in which drama is not only a livelihood but a profession and an art form. Mudigonda Lingamurthy, shortly Lingamurthy (Telugu: ముదిగొండ లింగమూర్తి) (10 October 1908 – 24 January 1980), was an Indian film character actor known for his works in Telugu cinema and theater. Life sketch Mudigonda Lingamurthy was born to a Hindu Shaiva family in Tenali, Andhra Pradesh. He used to play in school dramas in his childhood. Ghantasala (musician)
Ghantasala Venkateswararao (4 December 1922 – 11 February 1974), known mononymously by his surname as Ghantasala, was an Indian playback singer and film composer known for his works predominantly in Telugu and Kannada cinema and also in Tamil, Malayalam, Tulu and Hindi language films. He is considered as one of the greatest singers of Telugu cinema. In 1970, he received the Padma Shri award, India's fourth highest civilian award for his contribution to Indian cinema. Tripuraneni Gopichand
Tripuraneni Gopichand (8 September 1910 – 2 November 1962) was a Telugu short story writer, novelist, editor, essayist, playwright, film director, and a radical humanist. Gopichand was the son of renowned social reformer and play writer Tripuraneni Ramaswamy. Gopichand, inspired by M.N.Roy's Radical Humanism, became the first state secretary of the Radical Democratic Party (India) Andhra Pradesh. His second novel '' Asamardhuni Jivayatra'' (''Bungler: A Journey Through Life''), was the first psychological novel in Telugu literature. Gopichand was posthumously awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for ''Pandita Parameswara Sastri Veelunama'' in 1963, the first Telugu novel to win this award.
