Hugo Birger
Hugo Birger (born Hugo Birger Peterson) (12 January 1854 – 17 June 1887) was a Swedish painter. Biography Born in Stockholm, his father was printmaker S. A. Peterson. Birger studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts from 1870 to 1877. In 1877, he was awarded with the "Royal medal" for his painting ''Syndafallet''. It was praised for its strong colors and shininess. Birger moved to Paris in 1877, and spent the summer of 1878 in Barbizon with Carl Larsson and Carl Skånberg. He debuted at the Paris Salon the following year with ''Rue Gabrielle'' (1879, now in the Gothenburg Museum of Art). He submitted his painting ''Toaletten'' (English: ''The Toilet''), which depicts a lady in front of the toilet mirror, to the Paris Salon in 1880. From 1881 to 1882, Birger visited Spain and Northern Africa. His largest painting from Spain was ''La feria'' ("The Feast Day", 1882, Gothenburg Museum of Art), which depicts a breakfast in Granada. Michael Dahl
Michael Dahl (1659–1743) was a Swedish portrait painter who lived and worked in England most of his career and died there. He was one of the most internationally known Swedish painters of his time. He painted portraits of many aristocrats and some members of royal families, such as Queen Anne of Great Britain, Prince George of Denmark and the exiled Queen Christina of Sweden. Emma Chadwick, née Emma Hilma Amalia Löwstädt (10 August 1855, Stockholm – 2 January 1932, Avignon), was a Swedish painter who specialized in genre scenes and portraits. Gustaf Cederström
Gustaf Olof Cederström (1845-1933) was a Swedish painter who specialized in historical scenes and portraits. Biography His father, (1804-1892) was a naval officer and his mother, Theresine (1815-1873), was an amateur painter. His interest in history began when he was still very young and he discovered that one of his ancestors had participated in the Skirmish at Bender. At first, he planned to follow in his father's footsteps and pursue a military career. In 1864, he was assigned to an infantry regiment in Värmland as an ''underlöjtnant'' but, whenever possible, he also took art classes at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1870, he decided to resign his commission and become an artist. Siv Cedering
Siv Cedering (February 5, 1939 – November 17, 2007) was a Swedish-American poet, writer, and artist. She occasionally published as Siv Cedering Fox. Early life Siv Cedering was born 30 kilometers south of the arctic circle in rural Överkalix, Norrbotten County, Sweden, the second of four children. She began writing poetry at age 8. At 14, she immigrated with her family to San Francisco, where she graduated from Lowell High School. Career A poet and fiction writer, Siv Cedering wrote many books in her native Swedish, as well as in English, her second language, publishing a total of 20 books and four works of translation. She also wrote plays, screenplays, music, and television programs, and was a widely exhibited painter and sculptor. She was self-taught, having never received any formal training, though she was mentored by such notable poets as William Stafford. Charlotta Cedercreutz
Maria ''Charlotta'' Cedercreutz, married surname ''Wrangel'' (1736–1815), was a Swedish artist, lady-in-waiting and baroness. She was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. Her parents were the courtier Baron Lars Cedercreutz and Catharina Siljeström. Despite the fact that her beauty and fortune made her an attractive match, she is said to have dislike the thought of marriage and refused to marry for many years. She was married in 1770 to General Major Baron Georg Gustaf Wrangel af Adinal. From 1774, she was one of the six head ladies in waiting of the court of the Queen, Sophia Magdalena of Denmark. A talented Dilettante artist, she was inducted into the Royal Academy of Arts. At court, she was described as intelligent and cultivated but also very coquettish and particular about rank and attention, and it was said that she participated with eager in the pleasures and intrigues of the court. Maria Carowsky
Maria Carowsky (née Ross) (1723–1793) was a Swedish artist. Maria Carowsky was born in Gothenburg to the artist Johan Ross the Elder, an emigrant from Holstein Holstein (; nds, label=Northern Low Saxon, Holsteen; da, Holsten; Latin and historical en, Holsatia, italic=yes) is the region between the rivers Elbe and Eider. It is the southern half of Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost state of German .... In 1744, she married the artist Michael Carowsky. She was widowed in 1745 and took over her husband's studio. She was employed as a decorator of the Gothenburg Cathedral from the 1750s to the 1770s. She is known as the artist behind the pulpit in the Lerum Church from 1752. She played a great role as the teacher of several art students in her studio. Her daughter Christina Elisabeth Carowsky (1745–1797) was a portrait painter. Otto Gustaf Carlsund
Otto Gustaf Carlsund (11 December 1897 – 25 July 1948) was a Swedish avant-garde artist and art critic, connected to Cubism, Purism, Neo-Plasticism, and Concrete art. Biography In 1924 he moved to Paris to study under Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant at their newly founded Académie Moderne, where he developed a style of painting at first resembling Léger's, though soon became greatly influenced by Ozenfant's Purist style. In 1925 he met Le Corbusier and was commissioned to create murals for a cinema he was working on, though the project was eventually shelved, and in the same year he was recommended by Ozenfant to create murals for the planned library annex to Erich Mendelsohn's Einstein Tower. John Fabian Carlson
John Fabian Carlson (May 5, 1875 – May 19, 1947) was a Swedish-born American Impressionist painter. Background John Fabian Carlson was born in Kolsebo in Västervik Municipality, Kalmar County, in Småland, Sweden. The Carlson family immigrated to the United States in 1884, making their home in Buffalo, New York. Carlson attended evening art classes at the Art Students League of Buffalo, New York. There Carlson received instruction from Lucius Wolcott Hitchcock, a former pupil at the Académie Colarossi in Paris and the Art Students League of New York. Carlson won a scholarship in 1903 or 1904 to study with Lovell Birge Harrison at the Byrdcliffe Colony in Woodstock, New York. Carlson began exhibiting work in such national shows as the annual of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1905. Carl Fredrik Von Breda
Carl Frederik von Breda (16 August 1759 – 1 December 1818) was a Swedish painter who studied in and spent much of his career in Britain before becoming painter to the Swedish court. He was born in Stockholm in 1759, and moved to Britain where he was a student of Joshua Reynolds. Breda specialized in painting portraits and was called "the van Dyck of Sweden". He returned to Sweden 1796 where he became professor at the Academy of Arts, a popular portraitist, and a court painter. Breda married at age 22 and his son, Johan Fredrik, was also a painter, who studied under his father. Breda died in Stockholm in 1818. Breda painted James Watt. Early life Breda's great-grandfather Pieter emigrated to Stockholm around the year 1670 from the Netherlands. The "von Breda" family name seems to indicate a connection with the city of Breda.
