Nebraska Legislature
The Nebraska Legislature (also called the Unicameral) is the legislature of the U.S. state of Nebraska. The Legislature meets at the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln. With 49 members, known as "senators", the Nebraska Legislature is the smallest state legislature of any U.S. state. Unlike the legislatures of the other 49 U.S. states and the U.S. Congress, the Nebraska Legislature is a unicameral legislature, thus not separated into two houses. It is also nonpartisan, and does not officially recognize its members' political party affiliations. History The First Nebraska Territorial Legislature met in Omaha in 1855, staying there until statehood was granted in 1867. Jerome Warner
Phillip Jerome Warner (November 23, 1927 – April 20, 1997) was a farmer and politician in the U.S. state of Nebraska. He served as a state senator from Waverly, Nebraska in the Nebraska Legislature. His father, Charles J. Warner, served in the Nebraska Legislature as well, and also later as Lieutenant Governor of Nebraska. Personal life He was born on November 23, 1927, on his parents' farm in Waverly, Nebraska. He was the son of Nebraska State Senator Charles J. Warner, the first Speaker of the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature. He graduated from Waverly High School and then went on to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture after playing for the Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Team. Warner later married Betty Pearson in 1952, a former newspaper political reporter. Valentine, Nebraska
Valentine is a city in Cherry County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,737 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cherry County. History Valentine was founded in 1882. The Valentine post office was established on December 4, 1882. The Sioux City and Pacific Railroad was extended to that point and train service began on April 1, 1883. It was named for Edward K. Valentine, a Nebraska representative. As late as 1967, Valentine was split between two time zones. As described in one news report, "The mountain and central time zones meet at the center of Main Street, so an hour separates the two curb lines." According to the report, when clocks were required to be set back one hour for daylight saving time, Valentine's post office (which was in the central zone) split the difference and turned back its clock by only half an hour. Red Cloud is a city in and the county seat of Webster County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 962 at the 2020 census. History The region of present-day Red Cloud was intermittently occupied and used as hunting grounds by the Pawnees until 1833. In that year, a treaty was signed in which the Pawnees surrendered their lands south of the Platte River. According to George Hyde, it is likely that the Pawnees did not realize that they were thereby giving up their lands, and that they were led to believe that they were only granting the Delawares and other relocated tribes permission to hunt in the area.Hyde, George E.
