The Southern Virginia Knights are the athletic teams that represent Southern Virginia University, located in Buena Vista, Virginia, in intercollegiate sports as a member of the Division III level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the USA South Athletic Conference for most of its sports since the 2021–22 academic year; while its men's volleyball team competes in the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC). History The school's athletics programs historically competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and also competed in national tournaments of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). Southern Virginia began its athletic program in the fall of 1997, one year after it became a four-year liberal arts college with an LDS environment. Edwin Mulitalo
Edwin Moliki Mulitalo (; born September 1, 1974) is an American football coach and former player. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 1999 NFL Draft. He played college football at Arizona. Mulitalo earned a Super Bowl ring with the Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV. He also played for the Detroit Lions. Mulitalo served as the head football coach at Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia from 2018 to 2022. Gary M. Buer (born June 8, 1946) is an American educator and former football coach. He served as the head football coach at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota in 1977 to 1978, Southwest State University—now known as Southwest Minnesota State University—in Marshall, Minnesota from 1979 to 1992, and Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia from 2003 to 2006, compiling a career college football coaching record of 92–102–5. DeLane Fitzgerald is an American football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at Southern Utah University, a position he has held since 2022. Fitzgerald served as the head football coach at Frostburg State University from 2014 to 2021 and at Southern Virginia University from 2009 to 2013. He played college football at James Madison University from 1997 to 1999. Early life, playing career, and education Fitzgerald was born in Lovingston, Virginia.
