Sheffield Wednesday F
Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, England, whose name derives from the River Sheaf which runs through it. The city serves as the administrative centre of the City of Sheffield. It is historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire and some of its southern suburbs were transferred from Derbyshire to the city council. It is the largest settlement in South Yorkshire. The city is in the eastern foothills of the Pennines and the valleys of the River Don with its four tributaries: the Loxley, the Porter Brook, the Rivelin and the Sheaf. Sixty-one per cent of Sheffield's entire area is green space and a third of the city lies within the Peak District national park. Sheriff Of London Charity Shield
The Sheriff of London Charity Shield, also known as the Dewar Shield, was a football competition played annually between the best amateur and best professional club in England, though Scottish amateur side Queens Park also took part in 1899. The professional side was either the Football League champion or FA Cup winner from the previous season while the amateurs were usually represented by Corinthians, a renowned amateur side of the time. The first game was played on 19 March 1898, after being devised by Sir Thomas Dewar and ratified by the Football Association, whose president Lord Kinnaird and former president Sir Francis Marindin sat on the Shield's committee. Proceeds from the annual game were distributed to hospitals and charities. The game was the predecessor to the FA Charity Shield, today the FA Community Shield, which began in 1908 after the Amateur Football Association split from the Football Association. Fred Priest
Alfred Ernest Priest (24 July 1875 – 5 May 1922) was a professional footballer from the North East of England who won the 1899 and 1902 FA Cup finals with Sheffield United. Playing career Priest was born in Guisborough and played for Darlington and South Bank before joining Sheffield United in 1896. He made his debut for The Blades in the Football League First Division in the 1896–97 season, playing mainly as outside left, and helped United win the Football League championship in 1897-98. The 1896–97 season was the 26th season of competitive football in England. Overview Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa became the second team (after Preston North End F.C., Preston North End) to complete "Double (association football), the Double" of winning the Football League First Division, Football League Championship and the FA Cup. No other team would complete the double for 64 years. The 1897 FA Cup Final, Cup Final was played on 10 April 1897 between Aston Villa and Everton F.C., Everton. Birmingham Charity Cup
The Lord Mayor of Birmingham's Charity Cup, commonly referred to as the Birmingham Charity Cup, was a football competition for teams from Birmingham and the surrounding area. It was inaugurated in 1881 by the city's mayor, Richard Chamberlain, and Aston Villa were the first winners of the competition in the 1881–82 season, defeating Walsall Swifts 4–1. From 1910 onwards, the preliminary rounds were scrapped and the final became an invitation match. Other than during the First World War, the competition took place every year until 1939 with the exception of the 1925–26 season, when it was abandoned due to the General Strike. It fluctuated between being contested at the start and the end of the football season. Birmingham Senior Cup
The Birmingham Senior Cup is a football competition for Birmingham County FA club teams, organised by the Birmingham County Football Association. It began in 1876 and is the oldest county cup competition still active. The Birmingham Senior Cup is a regional cup contest, which has featured all of the West Midlands' big clubs, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Burton Albion, Coventry City, Port Vale, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Walsall and Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, in recent years many of region's higher division clubs have tended to treat the cup as a reserve or youth team competition, giving non-league sides a greater chance of success, while the competition's most successful team, Aston Villa, did not compete at all for several years, before returning for the 2018-19 competition. Bob Hill (footballer)
Robert Hill (3 July 1867 – 3 October 1938) was a Scottish footballer who played primarily as a centre or inside forward. Born in Forfar, Scotland, Hill began his football career when he was a soldier and was spotted playing for his regimental team, Black Watch. After a brief spell at Glentoran, it was Irish League rivals Linfield who bought him out of his army contract and took him on as a player. Hill spent three successful seasons with the Belfast club, winning two Irish Cup and two League Champions medals with them. On February 1893, Hill arrived at Sheffield United, scoring on his debut as a trialist and prompting United to sign him permanently. He soon established himself in United's first team and played in the 1893 test–match victory that saw them promoted to the First Division. United Counties League (1890s)
The United Counties League in the 1890s was a short lived league between football clubs in the Midlands and Sheffield which ran in addition (and concurrently) to the Football League. The competition only ran for two seasons, 1893/94 and 1894/95. The 1893/94 was the only year the competition finished and was won by Derby County.
