Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly known as Benfica, is a Portuguese sports club based in Lisbon. Ever since its foundation on 28 February 1904 as ''Sport Lisboa'' (later merged with Grupo Sport Benfica), it has had a total of 34 presidents. The first president was José Rosa Rodrigues and the current one is Rui Costa, who replaced the longest-serving Benfica president, Luís Filipe Vieira. The shortest tenure belongs to António Nunes de Almeida Guimarães. To elect a president, the paying members of Benfica (), along with Benfica houses, filiations, and delegations, vote in the club's elections, held every four years since 2012. In 2003 the club switched to electronic voting, and since 2010 only effective members with 25 years of continuous membership as an adult can run for president of Benfica. Maurício Vieira De Brito
Maurício Vieira de Brito (6 March 1919 – 9 August 1975) was a Portuguese businessman who served as the 21st president of Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica. Born in Novo Redondo, he served as president of Benfica between 30 March 1957 and 31 March 1962, succeeding Joaquim Ferreira Bogalho. Vieira de Brito was arguably the person who financed Benfica the most, during and after his term; with his own money, he made improvements to the original Estádio da Luz: illumination of the stadium, in 1958, and the first stage of the construction of the third tier, known as ''Terceiro Anel'', in 1960. This year, he was awarded the Águia de Ouro (Golden Eagle) by the club. Under Vieira de Brito's presidency, Benfica hired football coach Béla Guttmann in 1959 and footballer Eusébio in 1960. Manuel Vilarinho
Manuel Lino Rodrigues Vilarinho (born 23 June 1948) is a Portuguese businessman who was the 32nd president of sports club S.L. Benfica. Benfica Born in Lisbon, Vilarinho was elected president of Benfica on 27 October 2000 with 62% of the votes, ousting the incumbent chairman João Vale e Azevedo in the second most contested election in the history of Benfica. In the club's football department, Vilarinho caused head coach José Mourinho to demand a contract extension and ultimately leave Benfica when he stated that he saw the team's former player and coach Toni as their manager for the future. João Vale E Azevedo
João António de Araújo Vale e Azevedo (born 17 May 1957) is a Portuguese former lawyer who was the 31st president of sports club S.L. Benfica. In relation to his three-year club presidency, he was convicted of embezzlement, document forgery, breach of trust, and money laundering. Presidency of Benfica On 31 October 1997, Vale e Azevedo was elected the 31st president of Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica, succeeding Manuel Damásio. Manuel Damásio
Manuel Damásio Soares Garcia (born 9 July 1940), known as Manuel Damásio, is a Portuguese businessman who served as the 30th president of sports club S.L. Benfica. Born in Lisbon, Damásio was elected president of Benfica on 7 January 1994 with 87% of the votes, defeating candidate and friend José Capristano. Shortly after succeeding Jorge de Brito, Benfica won the Portuguese league title in football. Damásio then started a campaign to attract new members to the club to overcome financial difficulties, raising the number of associates from 83,000 to 150,000. He also tried to lower the club's debt with Parmalat as a sponsor; however, it did not help much. Along with the help of Abílio Rodrigues and Gaspar Ramos, Damásio transformed Benfica's football department. Jorge De Brito
Jorge Artur Rego de Brito ComIH ComM (7 November 1927 – 2 August 2006) was a Portuguese businessman, founder of Banco Intercontinental Português (BIP) and Brisa, who served as the 29th president of sports club S.L. Benfica, succeeding João Santos. During Brito's term at Benfica, from 24 April 1992 to 7 January 1994, its football team won the Taça de Portugal in 1993. At the end of that year, during the following season, he resigned due to financial difficulties dating back to "Verão Quente" (Hot Summer), when Benfica did not sign new players and lost two players to Lisbon rivals Sporting, thus not completing his triennal term. João Maria dos Santos Júnior (3 December 1914 – 15 February 2005), commonly known as João Santos, was a Portuguese businessman who served as the 28th president of sports club S.L. Benfica, succeeding Fernando Martins. Born on 3 December 1914 in Lisbon, Santos was elected president of Benfica on 27 March 1987. Supertaça Cândido De Oliveira
The Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira (; English: Cândido de Oliveira Super Cup, or simply Portuguese Super Cup) is an annual Portuguese football match played since 1979 between the winners of the Portuguese League (Primeira Liga) and Portuguese Cup (Taça de Portugal). When a team wins both competitions (thus achieving the double (''dobradinha'')), it plays again against the Cup runners-up. Duarte António Borges Coutinho, 4th Marquess of Praia e Monforte (18 November 1921 – 19 May 1981), commonly known simply as Borges Coutinho, was the 26th president of Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica. Born in Lisbon and educated both in England and Portugal, Borges Coutinho became a member of Benfica in 1959, aged 37. Ten years later, he became president of the club after defeating candidates Fernando Martins and Romão Martins in the elections on 12 April 1969, with 58 percent of the votes. Joaquim Ferreira Bogalho (11 December 1889 – 1 October 1977), also known as "the man of the stadium" (), was the 20th president of Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica. Bogalho was born in Alcobaça in 1889.
